  1. Can you have a wheat allergy and not be a Celiac? And how can that be?

It's all very connfusing, and a lot of grey-areas...

Yes, because an allergic reation creates a different type of antibody. Allergies create IgE reactions, while celiac creates IgA, IgG, and TtG antibodies. Allergies also don't damage parts like celiac and other autoimmune diseases. They both are due to a hyperactive immune system reacting to something it shouldn't, but it works differently. With an allergy, the body attacks the offending substance (wheat, for example) which causes symptoms, but with celiac, the body attacks itself because of the gluten, if that makes any sense. :)

  2. My suggestion (as a fellow married 22 year old) is to just be yourself at college. Try not to be too shy and make an effort to meet people. At a community college especially, where many of the students are non-traditional, you'll probably find that you are in no way alone. :)

As far as eating goes, salads with chicken or some other meat are a perennial favorite. I often eat tuna salad on a lundberg rice cake or on a corn cake. Another option is leftovers from the night before. I tend to snack throughout the day (I'm hypoglycemic, too), so you can always find me with fruit, string cheese, veggies, yogurt, or gluten-free granola bars. I like taking things that don't need to be reheated, and you can keep a soft lunchbox with a cold pack in your backpack.

I know you'll do great, as long as you believe you can! :D

  3. Hi,

Could be totally wrong here but if this sauce actually has Jack Daniels in it it´s not likely to be gluten-free- whisky is made from grain and has gluten in it I believe.

Distilled liquors are gluten-free, regardless of grain source, unless some of the mash or something is added back in after distillation. Jack Daniels is gluten-free.

  4. My answer to this question is:

I came back with positive blood work, but I was positive on the very unspecific markers. The doctor I am seeing does not believe I have it. I must have a confirmed diagnosis for my peace of mind. I have gone years and years with these symptoms and have gotten used to people and doctors telling me that nothing it wrong. I have come to see myself as a hypocondriac(sp?). I really dont' think I am, but I would feel so much better if someone could say here is the scientific evidence that something is wrong and that it has not been in my head for all of these years. If it comes back negative I will probably still try the gluten free diet, but I don't have $ to be throwing around on an expensive diet if it is not what is causing my problems. I want a biopsy for myself. I want to know.

Ditto. I had inconclusive bloodwork too, and I already know the gluten-free diet helps me, but I need to know that I did every test possible to know that's what I had, or I'd always doubt it. None of my doctors think I should be eating gluten, but I want to see what kind of damage, if any, there is. I'm lucky to have a fabulous primary doc, and a fabulous GI doc. He said that even if the biopsy is non-positive, they could have missed the damage because either it's further down the intestine, or none of the 8 or so grabs they made caught patchy damage. Either way it's gluten-free for me after the biopsy. I have to do it for me. I'll tell you all about it monday :)

  5. I just saw in the news yesterday that a 15 teen old boy faught his parents in courts and won. He did not want chemo for his cancer. :o He won his case. can you believe that. I dont remember what state that was from but if a teen can refuse medical treatment there is no way to make the other boy not eat gulten. The goverment is taking parenting out of the rights of the parents. (if this makes sence.)

    Jodele

He didn't fight his parents, actually. His family fought the state that was trying to give him chemo again, he wanted to do alternative treatments (Hoxey). His winning the case is actually a very good thing for parents, because it means that the state doesn't have control over your children. For now.

  6. Evie - doesn't sound like fun! I almost never iron.....linen shirts go in washer adn dryer, and I wear them rumpled  (remember, I don't have a REAL job)....

cleaning.....as we speak there is a 15-year-old cleaning my fridge....I am delirious....she loves doing this, how crazy is that....so I get a massive closet and fridge cleaning, a new TV, adn lots of fun for a few days.....blessings all around!

Hey wait - - is Armetta usign the ostrich now? can't see it, still seeing the flower...am I confused? highly likely.....

    Hit refresh.

  7. Yes, sad but true...no condition is going to be talked about too much until there are big, expensive drugs associated with its control. Celiac has a cure--diet--so the big pharaceuticals don't want anything to do with it. Zonulin may help to get them taking a second look.

...And maybe Oprah has stocks in the Zonulin company....

...Hell, she probably OWNS it! :)

    OFF TOPIC

Jeeze, Emily, look at that picture! You're way hotter than your poodle! :)

  8. Yea Chelsea--

I have no idea why he'd want to come back under those circumstances. I was just repeating what I had heard. Like I said, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

For anyone interested, here's an article from today's New York Times--

    Open Original Shared Link

Thanks, Patti. Well, that is strange, isn't it? Here we go again with Jean Benet....it will be interesting.

  9. This morning on my way to the store I was listening to a local talk-radio station. The host was saying that he thought that the guy who was arrested only hinted at doing it--that this guy was in trouble in Tailand, and wanted to get back to the U.S. instead of facing the law over there.

Supposedly, according to this radio host, he is using this situation to get back here--and when he does, he'll have some sort of proof that he didn't kill her.

Again, this is what I heard this morning--don't know if there's any truth to it or not.

It will be interesting to see how it unfolds--I can't believe it's been 10 years.

He pretty much confessed, during the press conference no less. Though he admitted that before to the authorities. He said that he was with her when she died, and that he didn't mean for her to die, that he loved her. As I understand it, he was trying to find a teaching job in Thailand, escaping from child porn charges in California I think.

I don't know why he'd want to come back here to avoid the law over there...he's facing first degree murder charges, sexual assault of a minor, and first degree kidnapping charges.

  10. Chelsea,

Sorry about your hair.....that sounds like a nightmare.

Now I'm a bit more carrot top than ronald mcdonald, but it's still not done. And I smell like a cathedral. Which isn't necessarily bad, I always loved that smell :)

    Ok... I'll arrange that. LOL!

But seriously... The Price is Right is better than Lazytown...which is what I'm watching.

I would rather spend eternity with Bob Barker telling me to spay and neuter my pets than watch 5 minutes of Lazytown. That show is 'effin creepy!

    And MUSICALS! Love them!

My all-time favorite is "The Music Man". We went up to New York City to see it on Broadway for our 25th anniversary. It was fantastic. When Craig Bierko (the man who played H. Hill) did his last performance, we went back and saw it again about a year later. It was great to be there on his last day :)

I love all of the songs fron the older shows like "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot".

My favorite is "Once Upon a Mattress"...so funny! I think that's at least partially because my high school did it and my biggest crush ever was King Sextimus :rolleyes:

    *sigh*

Sorry, what were we talking about again?

...what about Ice Capades, Stars On Ice, the Ice Skating shows??

Now my dork meter has really gone up

    :lol::lol:

My Wierd S*it o'meter replaced my dork o meter long ago

LOVE LOVE Ice Skating shows. One of my two athletic medals is a gold metal for skating :)

I didn't see the other kids, but they must have sucked, because I fell during my routine

  11. That's incredible that a mainstream store stocks it! Which one?

It's called HEB (A central Texas thing) and this particular location carries a lot of gluten-free stuff, and I think most of Authentic Foods' product line. I can think of two reasons 1: a proactive celiac or two, but I don't know which ones live up here 2: It's the closest grocery store to the culinary academy and so they carry more gourmet type stuff (though honestly, I see more of the students in Wal Mart  )

  12. OK, two things: Eating gluten for you is dangerous. You're allergic to wheat and rye, right? All gluten grains are contaminated with other gluten grains because of grain storage, transport, etc.

Secondly: You'll have to eat A LOT of barley to get up to an acceptable level of gluten daily, as I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), barley doesn't have as much barley per grain as wheat does. How do you eat your barley, anyway?

Third: (I guess that makes it three things) If your TtG levels were elevated, you have celiac. The gliadin tests are more sensitive, but less specific, and the TtG is more specific, but less sensitive. I don't think there are many false positives with the TtG.

Why worry about it? Since you have grain allergies, does it really matter anyway? Be totally gluten-free and be done with it :P
