I'm sorry you feel so awful, I hope you find relief soon.
My stomach has been screwed up lately too, as I'm writing this, my stomach feels like it's trying to eat itself again, and it's not making me real productive at work. My stomach has been messed up ever since a course of antibiotics. Have you taken any new meds or anything lately?
I've started taking probiotics to see if that'll help, maybe that'll help you? Maybe it'll help just to get some food into you, like plain rice or applesauce. It might help to calm things down.
Feel better
Sorry I couldn't be more help

I know that people with an anaphalactic allergy to peanuts can't be in the same room as them, but honestly, if I had such a severe allergy, that would keep me from flying. If they have to accomodate peanut allergies, they have to accomodate every other allergy as well.
I think people with dogs and cat's should have to wear a hazmat suit on planes so that other people allergic to animals aren't exposed to hair and dander on people's clothes on the plane
They won't even let people with oxygen tanks on board anymore.
It's a lawsuit waiting to happen, one of these days a Celiac is going to get pissed enough about it. We're just used to society not accomodating gluten intolerances, so we don't mind having to brown bag it. Of couse, we also know that airline food sucks anyway.

I had to take a 5 day course of Tequin (butt-kicking antibiotic) and a 7 day course of Prednisone to get rid of a nasty cellulitis infection from allergy testing (talk about your insult to injury...). I ended both a week and a half ago.
Anyway, I've gained about 5-8 lbs in a 2 week time! Freaking me out! I fluctuate a pound or three day to day, but that was a huge jump! If anything, my diet is healthier, so I don't know what the deal is.
I'm also not skinny! I'm overweight, though not *that* much. You can see by my avatar photo, that was taken only 9 mos. ago.
Could the sudden jump be from the course of prednisone? HELP!!!!
-
I've had that happen a lot, too. Now I realize it's from gluten, since I generally feel flu-ish when I get glutened. Achey and tired and cold and crappy feeling. Chalk it up to YET ANOTHER thing related to celiac...sheesh

Given that you're a doctor, I would say that number three is a strong contender....
As an example, my "second mom"s late husband was a world renound orothopaedic surgeon, and yet both he and his wife (a teaching nurse) had a somewhat reckless concern for their health at times. Sure, they ate right and exercised, but they rode around without seatbelts and drank in the car. They also had this funny little smoking habit of sneaking a few cigarettes a day. My mom got onto them all the time, especially about the no seatbelt thing (both my mom and second mom were OR nurses in the trauma unit together in ancient days). I've known many other medical professionals with the same kind of reckless health behavior.
Isn't there a saying about the cobbler's children going without shoes?
Number 5 is definitely my solid vote.

My husband's advisor has Celiac also, but he was misdiagnosed with MS. He was actually on MS meds for a couple of years as I understand it before they figured out it was Celiac. So yes, Celiac symptoms can mimic MS symptoms!

That is quite funny. Here is the link.

LOL!!!!!
That is hilarious. Funny how that stuff works. I've never seen one at Southstree seaport and I've been several times, my mom lives in NY

Whoa! did your kinesiologist say why a true Celiac should not eat rice? Oh, I'm getting sadder.
I'm going to pretend that I didn't read that...
One crisis at a time, people!

Bob's Red Mill is on my "not my friend" list, along with Amy's, WingStop, Central Market, my local asian market, and McDonald's (fries be damned, their food still makes me sick)
Gluten me once, shame on you. Gluten me twice, shame on me.
As for flour, I'm in the market, as it were....
I'm thinking I'll go with the enerG stuff, no reactions from any of their stuff so far...
Is their stuff any good?

About the Jello, BELIEVE IT!!!! If it doesn't say wheat, barley, rye, or oats, it's gluten-free! I've never had a problem. You'll come to nealy worship Kraft for allowing an iota of normalcy into your life!
I'm in the zero-tolerance camp, mostly because I get sick as a dog from a molecule of gluten since being gluten-free. I also feel lots better, generally.
I think it's hard for a doctor to "sentence" someone to a zero tolerance of anything diet, however, it's really easy for someone without Celiac to say "cheating is ok sometimes." I hate being sick, ergo, I hate gluten.
Also, any amount of gluten, especially over time, is going to do damage, the problem is that you can't go by symptoms. You may get away with a little gluten here and there, but eventually, it'll make you sick. Damage can be done and your risks can be higher, so why risk it? Does that make sense?
Welcome aboard the board!

I didn't realize that 14 was a late start. I started at 15 and my mom at 16.
I was on the late end of normal, but it also depends on the calendar year you got your first period. Over the last 50 years, the average age of menarche has gotten younger and younger. The average age is now 12, as opposed to 16 a hundred years ago...

I know you're in Canada, so I don't know what your disability laws are, but at my university in the states, people took notes for the disabled (mostly blind and deaf) or those who were too sick. Every university here has a disabilites office, I imagine Canada is the same, talk to them and see if you have any options from that angle. Other than that, the video thing is a good idea or have a friend use a tape recorder, if the prof will allow it.

Do you take anything like Benedryl?
Believe me, I will be even more careful then I was before!
Lollie
Whatever you do, don't use topical benadryl! My allergist said it actually makes skin allergies/reactions worse!
He told me to just lay on the cortisone...

I'm sorry you have to be a pall bearer...
I'm sorry for your loss...
That said, I get those dots, too. I normally get them when I throw up, and usually only when I have that glass-digesting pain and I'm throwing up. The first time I had them was with mono.
The dr. said they are caused by little capillaries bursting under pressure, not just with vomiting, but with coughing hard. The only thing you can do is cover them with makeup and they'll go away in a few days.
-
My period was 10 days late last month, my first month gluten-free and I was coincidentally off the pill that month. Freaked me out. Before that, I started just spotting for my period and the dr blamed it on the pills (which I've been taking for 7 years) but I think the pill was the only thing making me have it to begin with.
I was also a late starter, two days before my 14th birthday.

We took leftovers and made a brand new favorite food... 1.5 cups cooked mashed potatoes, 1.5 cups cooked grits, 1 cup brown rice flour, 1 small -grated- onion, 2 eggs, salt/pepper... mix, shape into patties, and pan fry on both sides 'til golden brown. Yum yuuummmmm, good! Goes great with applesauce, eggs, sausage, and/or whatever you like for breakfast.
GC
My mom used to make these when we had leftover mashed potatoes! Of course, she used wheat flour...
We usually had "breakfast for dinner" on those nights and had the pancakes with eggs and bacon. YUM!

I can feel kind of yucky with the gluten replacement foods, even Tinkyada makes me dopey if I have too much of it. I think a lot of it is because rice has at least a medium glycemic index.
I had a gluten-free carrot cake yesterday and half way through the piece I went, "you know what, I don't really like cake!"
Which is true, I don't, and didn't before going gluten-free. I don't buy a ton of replacement breads etc. because I didn't really eat them to begin with (talk about listening subconsciously to your body). When I have, though, they do make me a bit dopey.
They're heavier and use exotic grains my poor war-torn digestive tract doesn't like to process regularly...

Funny you ask I'm nibbling on a bar right now.
ALPROSE SWISS DARK CHOCOLATE
Greyish label with gold and white lettering. It is Koser. You can buy it in the Koser isle of WALMART. I haven't found it anywhere else.
They also make another with Hazelnut filling that is also wonderful. It tastes great, I think better then when I ate [milk] chocolate. If you would like me to list the ingredients just ask I will be glad to post them here for you.
This is a SOY FREE product. I am a believer SOY is poison, and this is free of it.
Enjoy!
I love their milk and white chocolate bar, and I'm not really a fan of chocolate! SOOOO GOOD!!!

Tara, you can whine all you like here, we've all done it! I know what you mean about the beer and feeling like crying. The first few months are the worst, I promise you.
Once you realise how much better you can feel, it will get easier. I've had to go hide in the toilet a couple of times when everyone here at the office were eating burgers and pizza in front of me. The smell nearly made me mad.
I still have bad days but they are few and far between now. I used to be addicted to bread and I can honestly say I don't crave it at all anymore, and I stand and make 2 dozen sandwiches every night for my kids!
Its probably hard for you to believe right now that it will get easier, but it will eventually become second nature to you.
Yvonne
Sorry if you mentioned this somewhere else, and it's totally off topic, Yvonne, but 2 dozen sandwiches? So do you have twenty-four children or 4 very hungry football players?

I dream of a gluten free bakery...
I think they can ship anything wherever.... here's the website:

So far I've just had their bread (eh, edible), their sugar cookies (awesome!), and I'll let you know how the carrot cake is...
The cafe itself has wheat bread, but I don't think they bake it themselves, since they don't have it for sale. The only other things they make that are bad for us are two things with oats. I haven't been glutened yet!
-
I'm guessing you're thin, which doesn't help matters because I honestly think many people equate gluten intolerance with anorexia
HAHA! I wish! Note the flabby arms I could use to hang glide on my avatar! So they really WILL think I'm on a wacky diet. Last time someone asked me if I was on Weight Watchers
If they continue to pursue it or say "Oh, that must be horrible etc," handle yourself gracefully with a short response like "It can be difficult at times, but I still get to enjoy many foods." Worse comes to worse, change the subject.Yeeeah, note the story in the first post. She would not let up! And I had been gluten-free, like, a week. And she was 3 inches away from me, I practically had to climb up on the counter to get away!
I got gluten-free carrot cake with a huge glob of icing, it looks really good. It doesn't even have nuts! I haven't had carrot cake in so long because of my nut allergy! I'm so excited! I didn't have cash and there was a $5 minimum to use my debit card so I got a gluten-free sugar cookie, too. Tasted just like the real thing! I am PSYCHED!!

I just realized, after posting this, that I have a WHOLE FRIGGIN GLUTEN FREE BAKERY IN TOWN!
I'm an idiot...I always forget it's there
I just hope I can get there, on the clear other side of town, and back on my lunch break
Thanks for the suggestions...but now I have another question...
How do I deal with the STUPID COWS I work with in this situation? It's bad enough they look down on me for being in the nicer office with my high and mighty college degree, but now this too?
help!

Tell me more about these sugar nuts please!!
How much? What temp? How long?
How delicious sounding!!
Here's a recipe from allrecipes.com: Open Original Shared Link
INGREDIENTS:
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water
1 pound pecan halves
1 cup white sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Grease one baking sheet.
In a mixing bowl, whip together the egg white and water until frothy. In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
Add pecans to egg whites, stir to coat the nuts evenly. Remove the nuts, and toss them in the sugar mixture until coated. Spread the nuts out on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake at 250 degrees F (120 degrees C) for 1 hour. Stir every 15 minutes
I keep meaning to try it with almonds because I'm allergic to tree nuts (almonds are in the peach family). It's got great reviews!

So I work at a satellite office, but I have to go over to the main office today because there is a birthday. I don't want to be the only one there without cake or something to eat! I'll get asked lots of questions and likely be ridiculed (my coworkers aren't very nice, the last time there was a birthday, I couldn't eat the cake I provided and the office manager stood about 3 inches away from me with her cake and asked me all these questions and if it bothered me that everyone else had cake bla bla bla...)
So I'm bringing my own dessert! (take that, you stupid cows!)
The only problem is that I never get much notice for these things and the party is in about 3 hours... I have an outback, chili's, TGI Friday's, and Whole Foods near the office....
I just looked up the chocolate thunder thing from outback, but it has pecans in it! I only have an oral allergy, so I'd probably be ok in a pinch...
Any suggestions?!?!
I guess I could take some ice cream...but I'd rather it be a baked good...
Thanks for your speedy help!

I second the yogurt, my mom, ever the mama lion, made us eat lots of yogurt and garlic (thankfully not together) during cold season, and then gatorade, chicken soup, and more yogurt when we were sick.
In February my neices flew out to see her and one of them had a stomach bug. When I talked to my neice a few days later she said, "I was sick, but Nana gave me and Jordie (her twin) yogurt and now we're all better."
