  1. Congrats, Chelsea! I'm waiting for the same thing. I was practically doing flips when I found that I do have double copies of the gene. I had increased platelets too- what does this mean?

My dr wasn't too concerned about it, since it wasn't extremely elevated. She said that we could spend all kinds of time and money looking for an obscure genetic thing or whatever it might be, or we could leave it be since it's not bothering me. Here's a website that references a high platelet count to autoimmune disorders:

She said she'll be interested to see if being gluten-free doesn't get them back down, and make my RBC's a bit bigger, too. I had a dr once tell me that the small RBC's were because of a genetic condition that afflicts people of mediterranian and middle eastern descent. Considering I'm about two skin shades from albino and that I'm mostly Irish and Swedish, I seriously doubt it. Then again, this was the same doctor that tried to diagnose me as bulemic because I was in college and throwing up a lot. Oh no, it couldn't be because I'm sick

The article I listed there explains small RBC's as a lack of iron or bleeding.

  2. so you're saying i should jump into the activia? how does it make you feel? can you notice a difference like they say you will?

Don't eat the dannon crap since they're giving you the runaround about the gluten thing.

Cascade Fresh is the brand I eat, and their website explains what all of their cultures do, and also where to get it. They have 8 cultures which is 2 more than most.

EDIT: I forgot the most important part, it says gluten free right on the label!

I've also noticed that some mainstream yogurts are adding inulin to yogurt for fiber, and I've seen it on forbidden foods lists. For example, stonyfield farms has it in their yogurt.

My mom has always told me to eat yogurt whenever I have stomach problems. That said, I've eaten a lot of yogurt over the last 3 or so years

I do notice that the D kind of settles a bit when I'm good about eating yogurt, so I think it does help. At any rate, it's good for you because it gives you more calcium :)

  3. I recently bought some Tetley chamomile tea and noticed the nutrition label said it contained 15mg of sodium per serving. I thought this was weird...how can chamomille have sodium? So I went to their website (Canadian website). I coudn't find any reference to the sodium, but I came across this weird gluten statement.

    "

We don't have the new labelling laws here in Canada...so I'm wondering why they'd put such a statement on their site???

    It's a CYA response

Cover Your A$$, it's getting kind of drafty

  4. well it isn't that their yogourts aren't gluten free.......it seems like they just want to save their tails just in case someone has a reaction. they have this new activia stuff that is supposed to help your digestive system that i was looking forward to trying and now i'm kinda nervous to....

The whole activa thing is just new packaging for what yogurt already has naturally, live cultures.

Cascade Fresh Active8 yogurt is basically the same thing, and it says gluten free on the package. I get mine at whole foods.

  5. Hi. My doctor prescribed Hycosamine (sp?) for severe abdominal cramps for the times I may get glutened. (happened 2 nights ago, could not bare the cramping) It hasn't happened for about 4 months, but I was reminded the other night how bad it is when it does happen. I have these pills now and I wonder has anyone else ever taken this? Does it work? Does it make the nausea worse?

    Thanks,

    Denise

It is the generic for Levsin/levsinex, and it's an anti-spasmodic. I've been taking it for a month or so because I get AWFUL stomach spasms and those seem to take the edge off. I take it on an as needed basis, and it doesn't make the nausea worse, though there is only so far the meds can go.

I prefer Bentyl which is a shorter acting version of levsinex, the bentyl is 4x a day. I don't get any side effects with either, but I still get D with it.

If nausea is a huge problem when you're glutened, ask your Dr for Phenergan suppositories. They knock you on your butt, but they work for both the nausea and the pain. Just make sure you have lots of sleeping time and that you don't take it at the same time as your hycoscyamine (I did that once and slept through an entire day  )

  6. aw, i cant do that friday  i have to take the MPRE the next morning (a portion of the bar exam)...have so much fun though, im very jealous :) hopefully we plan another trip in a few weeks so i can try it too!!!

I feel sorry for you! My mom took the NY bar a couple of years ago after graduating from the law school at Queens college, good luck! The NY bar is the worst, and the MPRE sucks anywhere :P

  7. Finally figured out what the name of my yogurt was, because I ate some :P

I eat Cascade Fresh because it says gluten free right on the package and it has 8 active cultures instead of the standard 6. It's clutured right in the cup and it's pretty good. I got it at whole foods.

EDIT: wow, sounds like I'm advertising! I'm not, I have no financial interest in them, I'm just in it for the extra cultures

  8. I'm new at this, too, but it sounds like you have gleaned pretty much what I have.

The dairy thing depends on how damaged your villi are. I don't know if I'm intolerant or not, doesn't seem to bother me much, and either way, one crisis at a time.

I'm right there with you on the SCD diet, I know people rave about it, but it seems way too raw vegan/caveman diet in it's philosophy. I don't trust it. That and I like my processed foods, thank you very much.

Eating out is risky, but so is eating in your kitchen if it has wheat stuff in it

  9. Amy's has always had strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) to assure that

non gluten products are not contaminated with gluten and we will continue to

strengthen these practices. The GMPs include strict raw material control,

sanitation practices and employee training. We are constantly updating these

procedures to include more testing and in process checks. We have an on-going

commitment to ensuring that both our "Gluten Free" and "No Gluten

Added" products are acceptable products for any consumer that wants to

    avoid gluten.

That's a Vague McAnswer if I do say so myself

I guess they're standing behind their "well we're trying" fence, eh?

All I know is that they don't really agree with me. <_<

  10. If a child accidentally ate an entire 60-count bottle of Gummy Vites, the effects would be similar to those experienced after eating 5 ounces of plain gummy bear candy: upset stomach or stomach pain, temporary constipation or diarrhea.

I like the *accidental* part of the statment. Oops, I accidentally kept reaching into the jar and accidentally put more in my mouth and accidentally chewed and accidentally swallowed and accidently repeated the motion SIXTY TIMES :o

  11. :( HOw else am I sposed to pay for all these gluten-free speicality foods!

OKay sooo say your in a normal grocery store, would like the store brand be okay?

FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR YOURSELF AND GET HER SOME DARN YOGURT!!!!

Yeast infections are 100x worse than pms, mood wise.

Store brand is fine, I think it's safe to say that all yogurt has live cultures. It'll say "contains live cultures" or something to that effect on the package

  12. Hi

I am new to this forum. I am also new to the gluten world. My daughter has recently been diagnosed and all of this is new. My question re the lasagna is what is the problem with ricotta. I thought it was O.K. to eat. Is there gluten in it. Sorry to sound ignorant if I do.

    glutenmom14

Some people have issues with vinegar in spite of it being gluten free (yes, vinegar is gluten-free, except malt vinegar). Apparently some ricotta has vinegar in it, my guess it's the company's way of speeding up the curdling process. <_<

  13. I'm thinking of taking these, too. Are there any situations where they could make things worse--like cause D or anything like that?

Be careful about taking too much. There can be too much of a good thing, and an overgrowth of good bacteria is almost as bad as an overgrowth of bad bacteria! Remember that probiotics are living bacteria!

There's definitely a balance that needs to be attained in the digestive tract.

  14. I have a question too! I saw a commercial about probiotics being in yogurt, I bought some at whole foods. The claim is give them a try for two weeks, and they are supposed to regulate your digestion.....

Anybody know anything about that? I thought it can't hurt!

    Lollie

Probiotics are just good bacteria, and the bacteria is what makes the yogurt, well, yogurt. When it says active cultures, the cultures are bacteria.

My mom's been forcing yogurt on me for years whenever I've had stomach problems. Now she's moved on to her grandkids

Like, when you have the stomach flu (w/D especially) or like us, chronic D, all of the good bacteria gets wiped out of your digestive tract.

The bacteria are instrumental in helping you digest food and moving things along properly.

Also, if you take antibiotics and you eat yogurt, it helps things. Especially if you're a girl, it keeps you from getting yeast infections on antibiotics :o

If you look at what probiotics have in them, it's usually acidophylus (sp). This is one of usually 6-8 bacteria found in yogurt.

    Yogurt is alive!

  15. I had written in my original posting that my doctor thought my blood tests were negative for celiac anti-bodies. I've been suspicious of that for awhile, so I asked for a copy of the test results. I was a bit stunned when I read that my IgG anti-gliadin level was 21, four points over positive. I guess I shouldn't be stunned because I had to tell my doctor what the tests were for celiac disease. He was really uninformed.

That's why I've made it a habit to always get copies of bloodwork results.

  16. I wanted to ask before I bought them. Are they yummy or kinda gross? I am somewhat picky about attempted gluten-free crackers. Thanks!

I haven't tried them, since they look like styrofoam. I get nervous about really shiny gluten-free crackers in that way

I am *in love* with Blue Diamond Nut Thins. I only eat the almond kinds since I'm allergic to other tree nuts, but they are FANTASTIC and taste great with cheese!

  17. Congratulations just doesn't seem to be appropriate. :)

Welcome to my world seems a tab sarcastic. :P

How about – glad you have been validated by having a professional confirm what you already knew. That doesn’t quite get it either does it. Oh well, my heart is in the right even if my words are quite right.

    Canary

p.s. I thought of another way to express myself. Congrats on getting off the hypochondriac list.

Sounds kind of like a Shoebox greeting card, doesn't it?

I'm going to start a line of greeting cards for things you don't really know how to respond to, like that

    Other examples would be:

"Congratulations on your divorce being finalized, feel free to frequent strip clubs without guilt!"

"Eat sh*t and die, cause I never liked you anyway"

Sorry, it's just the kind of mood I'm in :P

  18. (I apologize for the Lionel Richie reference)

I never thought I would be happy about being diagnosed with a genetic autoimmune disorder :D ...

I just came back from the Dr. and based on the blood tests, and the fact that I already feel better after only a few weeks, she's given me the official Celiac diagnosis!

I'm not just a hippie hypochondriac!!!

When I told her about the Great Kettle Potato Chip Fiasco of last week, I think she thought "yep", that and I told her I vaguely remember my phantom GI doc saying my stomach lining was inflamed when he did the endo a couple years ago. I was drugged, so who knows. And the fact that the nexium didn't do a damn thing.

And that everytime a Dr told me to add more fiber to my diet to relieve the D and so I would regulate, whole wheat everything made it worse.

Wahoo! I have a follow up for blood tests in 6 mos to see if my platelets go down and my red blood cells get a little bigger (I'm on and off anemic, and my RBC's are smaller than normal)

You know what that means? I DON'T HAVE TO GO TO THE DR FOR 6 MOS UNLESS I'M SICK!!! My blood can stay in my body!!!

I <3 my Dr and her common sense approach.

I'm know going to come down from this high eventually and crumble into a pile of depression when I realize what this means...Oh well, screw it! :P
