  1. It is my understanding, through reading posts on this board, that the new labelling laws went into effect january 1, 2006 and require companies to state clearly if a product contains any of the major allergens. I was quite familiar, even before being diagnosed with celiac, with seeing these warnings since I have always been a label reader, and I was used...
  2. i think there's also something to be said for the fact that everyone, even people who don't have celiac disease, gets sick sometimes. it seems like there are posts upon posts listing random foods asking if they caused a reaction - and every time i read one of them, i wonder if it's the food they are questioning at all? don't get me wrong at all, but i'm just...
  3. celiac3270 - i'm confused because you said you can have chips, but specifically not doritos - then you posted a list which included every variety of doritos as okay. i have checked the bag before and they're fine.
  4. thanks for the replies!!! basically i guess the issue is a)'announce to everyone that i have celiac disease and answer countless questions and puzzled faces and can you have this or can't you, etc. etc.' or b)just not mention it and try to self remedy myself.. i figured i lived with celiac disease for years not knowing i had it, so 5 days with some glutened...

    ARCHIVED Hidden Gluten

wheat starch you can't have, but maltodextrin does not have any gluten in it, so at least it's only half as bad as you thought it was
  6. so here's my dilemna.... I've recently discovered that I had celiac disease, and have been gluten free for 3 weeks now. The only people who really know about this are my mom and sister, since we are very close; my roomates; and some of my coworkers, since i work in a restaurant and food is a huge topic of conversation with us. I don't think I was hugely sensitive...
  7. i wanted to respond to this quickly because that's one of my favorite candies, so i only scanned the responses and may have missed something, but everything i have read and been told says that modified food starch in the us is corn or potato unless specified as wheat starch. which is even easier to decipher for us now with the allergen labelling thing, because...
  8. it could just be that you haven't had greasy food in a while and your stomach wasn't that used to it. some people eat that stuff all day and feel fine, but to others who don't eat it every often it's like a little shock to the system the first few times.
  9. they have a special aisle labeled 'gluten free' it's mostly pasta, rice crackers, etc. but they have a couple kinds of granola (the cinnamon raisin kind is awesome if you add a little milk, heat it in the microwave, and add a touch of sugar and some extra raisins - it tastes like a cross between flavored oatmeal and a yummy dessert). besides the gluten free...
  10. I'm new at this and don't want to make a big fuss when I go out. I've also been a vegetarian my whole life which is baffling enough to the people I go out with, always wondering can you go here? can you eat anything? yes, i can always find something without meat. besides most places now have amazing different salads, and i just ask for them without the chicken...
  11. I have read through a bunch of the other posts here, and most said that natural and artificial flavors were generally okay in the US, and especially since they're at the very end, I wasn't as worried about it. The one that I was more confused about was the maltodextrin? since I know malt isn't allowed, but I wasn't sure if it was the same thing, like how...
  12. This is from a weight watchers smoothie mix that I loooove. I've noticed the label hasn't been updated for the new allergen laws since it obviously contains milk and doesn't have that whole bold 'contains milk' thing under the ingredients. I'm new to this, so I still can't decipher the funny ingredients other than the obvious and have been eating some pretty...
  13. when I went back for my one rushed follow up appointment with the nurse practitioner after the endoscopy and colonoscopy, all she said was that I did not have celiac disease. I had done research and my parents had talked to people they knew who had celiac disease, and I said to the nurse "I have heard that if a person has an antibody for celiac disease then...
  14. After feeling generally sick and fatigued for a long period of time, I was told by a gi specialist that my iron was very low for no reason, my white blood cell count was out of control, and that I had the antibody for celiac disease and that more than likely, I had celiac disease. After the endoscopy etc, they told me they found only some damage and no signs...
  15. Just as a heads up for people placing special orders in restaurants - I have read several posts and noticed that they are most always one extreme or another - excellent response to gluten free requests, or no attention paid whatsoever. I have worked as a waitress for years, and although I only found out I might have celiac diease in the past year, this is...
  16. I keep coming up with more questions, questions, questions.... everything you all have said has made sense - now - since I have not had an official medical diagnosis anywhere in my records, and I don't even have a regular primary care physician that I have seen for long and know well - when I go to doctors, fill prescriptions, etc. etc., when they ask about...
  17. all new things that i hadn't heard before - seems when you go to the doctor these days, they're in such a hurry and they barely give you the chance to ask questions, let alone answer them for you. thank you for the responses, i guess i'll continue to do my research. I think maybe part of the reason I was getting so sick sometimes is because I'm also a vegetarian...
  18. that kind of ties back to my question though - how do you know that they all have celiac disease? did the doctor say that they definitely have it? the reason i'm looking for second opinions with me is because my doctor told me after my bloodwork that i had the antibody for celiac disease and that that was probably the reason for my problems. they did the...
  19. Hello - I am a college student and last year I had issues with ongoing fatigue and general upset stomach, etc. I was also very iron deficient as well as deficient in many other vitamins even though I have always been very conscious to eat a lot of vegetables and to eat healthfully. Also, in the midst of this ongoing health kick, I had been paying attention...
