ARCHIVED Gluten Delaying Potty Training ?
JakeARoosMommy replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am going on the experience of my older child. #2 comes behind #1 in potty training. I think that kids are scared to have something falling from them. Hang in there mom. I am going through potty training with my 2yr old Celiac son. -
ARCHIVED How Long Til You See Improvement Form Going Gluten Free?
JakeARoosMommy replied to Mom2six's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can tell you only from my experience. My 21-month old ds has been gluten-free for about 2 months. The vomiting immediately stopped. He still gets a mild rash, but not at all the agony that he has gone through, since his surgery in November. His rash took about two weeks to clear up. His behavior improved within a week. His bowel started coming under control... -
ARCHIVED Diaper Rash
JakeARoosMommy replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I understand that psorasis or dermatitis (probably a misspell) is one of the many symptoms to autoimmune diseases such as Celiac, Diabetes and Hypothyroidism. Jake, my toddler son, had very bad cradle cap. I haven't noticed anything lately though, outside of that awful diaper rash. -
ARCHIVED Diaper Rash
JakeARoosMommy replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wonder if they tested her for diabetes? Diabetes often causes stubborn yeast infections that caused bad diaper rashes in Jake. Diabetes has also been known to cause irregular bowels. There are also allergies to certain types of diapers (I now use seventh generation that is chlorine-free) and butt wipes. You could also be looking at other food allergies... -
ARCHIVED Diaper Rash
JakeARoosMommy replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have been using an over-the-counter cream called Eurcin (I hope I am spelling it right. pretty sure that is correct). Nothing else seemed to work. The doctor was constantly giving us creams, steroids, and anti-fungal, but this was all that I found to work. My son's rashs were like chemical burns. It burned on contact with his bowel. The Eurcin is safe to... -
ARCHIVED *****sigh*****home From Hospital--temporarily
JakeARoosMommy replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Chrissy, Lots of hugs to you! I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's condition. A church member of ours had a daughter that we helped to send off to a rehab center for eating disorders down in Arizona. It was costly, but it seems to be working. I pray that your daughter will recover soon. -
ARCHIVED Going Gluten Free
JakeARoosMommy replied to betsy7's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The hardest thing about going gluten free with my toddler son is the other kids, esp. at the babysitters and my older child. They could not understand that gluten is not just wheat and that they couldn't just feed him anything that they were eating, b/c of the hidden gluten in things. Jake is just beginning to get used to this and he hands things to me before... -
ARCHIVED Does Any Of This Sound Familiar?
JakeARoosMommy replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I read your post and felt like I was reading the story of my 21 month old son Jacob. My son's behavior and physical sxs have done a complete turn around. He still has soft stool, but he certainly doesn't have the blistering rashes that he used to have. He is no longer irriatable, but very happy and smiling most of the time. :)Something to tell any GI or... -
ARCHIVED Going gluten-free
JakeARoosMommy replied to momothree's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I haven't added another toaster in my kitchen, since my 21-month old son Jacob Noah, was dx two months ago. I just give everything a real good cleaning. Like if I fry up a grilled cheese sandwich, I might use two separate frying pans and spatulas, but I didn't think that the toaster would retain that much wheat on it's inside grate. -
ARCHIVED Tremendous Appetite
JakeARoosMommy replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's interesting that someone brings up diabetes. My son's father's family is covered with diabetes. I am taking him back to the doctor next week. The GI at the Children's Hospital said that yeast infections are very common in Diabetics and Celiacs and also cause a heavy appetite. -
ARCHIVED Experiences With Biopsies And Young Children (under 2yrs)
JakeARoosMommy replied to betsy7's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Nini, I think that the GI doctor was saying this, if we ever wanted to find out if it was something that he might just have temporarily vs. lifelong. He refuses to give a dx of Celiac without a biopsy being done, just a gluten intolerance. I could only dream that this was temporary, but something says it is Celiac and will be lifelong. I don't know why... -
ARCHIVED Experiences With Biopsies And Young Children (under 2yrs)
JakeARoosMommy replied to betsy7's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm in the same predictament. We had our appointment with the GI doctor at the Children's Hospital in Seattle today. The doctor said that my 21-month old son would have to go back on gluten for at least a week before the biopsy. The GI doctor said that this biopsy would rule out if it was just an allergy to gluten (that he could outgrow) vs. Celiac Disease... -
ARCHIVED Still Having Diarrhea
JakeARoosMommy replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 20-month old son had these same sxs 3 months ago (excessive hunger and thirst, constant diarrehea, and blistery rash). I know how frustrating this can be. You feel your child's pain. They finally found, through a blood test, that he was intolerant to both gluten and milk. The dark stool usually indicates blood in the stool. My son had such a painful... -
ARCHIVED Question About Ingredients
JakeARoosMommy replied to misgiss's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hey, thanks for the heads up! That is absolutely petrifying to think that this could happen, esp. since my 21-month old son was just dx w/ Celiac. Any gluten in his system and it takes him a good month before he's his old self again! -
ARCHIVED Help With Gaining Weight
JakeARoosMommy replied to bakerprincess's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Dear Bakerprincess, The username of the lady that sells e-cookbooks for glutenfree cooking that you can download to your computer is specialtycookbooks. Her two recipe books are $1.99 each. Her recipes are awardwinning and I can attest to it! Her recipe for white bread can be made in the breadmaker. I put all of my flours together in ziplocks ahead of... -
ARCHIVED Help With Gaining Weight
JakeARoosMommy replied to bakerprincess's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm a Navy wife. We were stationed in Sasebo, Japan for three years. You are in the midst of gluten free cooking! Japanese are hopelessly addicted to their rice patties. That is their major harvest. Do you have a ginza or an open market nearby where you can buy rice flour? I went all the way to Chinatown in Seattle yesterday to buy the different types of... -
ARCHIVED Question About Ingredients
JakeARoosMommy replied to misgiss's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Burger King's french fries (as on their website) are gluten free AND they guarantee that they only use a designated fryer to fry their fries in. No other fast food place does this. I tried McD's and my son got sick. I went to other websites for several fast food chains and they said the fries were gluten free, but they were often too busy to regulate fryers... -
ARCHIVED Tremendous Appetite
JakeARoosMommy replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know that my son had an excessive appetite before we found out he was gluten intolerant. It seems like the body is in a growth spurt and just isn't getting enough nourishment. Many gluten free foods don't have much nutrition in them. I have been giving my son a vegetarian supplement with his fruit juice in the morning. -
ARCHIVED More Questions Re 20mth Old Daughter
JakeARoosMommy replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had my son off of gluten for a couple of weeks, when he popped up positive for gluten and milk intolerance. The gluten in the test is ran by seeing if the blood will produce antibodies. The doctor was able to tell us that at that time (the time the blood work was done) that Jake was not experience any current reactions to gluten. We haven't had him formally... -
ARCHIVED Do You Suppose It Was Gluten?
JakeARoosMommy replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Restaurants! We had the samething happen with Jake this last week. We dined at Taco Time and he got a taco salad. He loved it, but 45 minutes later, he had cramps. I discovered that the taco seasoning had to of contained gluten. I now go onto the websites of restaurants and get their ingredients lists. I don't know about Canada, but here in the states, it... -
ARCHIVED Bday Parties
JakeARoosMommy replied to jaimi alderson's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am dreading my DD and DS birthday's this year! The last six weeks have been exhausting! I keep hoping that the test results were wrong or maybe he will 'outgrow' this, but I know this is real and lifelong. I have become quite adept to baking and nutrition now. I just feel so tired of spending all this time in the kitchen making special foods from scratch... -
ARCHIVED 2 Yr. Old With Celiac?
JakeARoosMommy replied to happy4dolphins's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son is only 20 months old and has tested positive for gluten intolerance through blood and stool samples. We see the GI next week for the official dx of Celiac Disease. He has had diarrehea nonstop since his surgery in November (5 months ago). Lots of people come down with sxs for the first time after a surgery or babies that are just new to solids. Stressors... -
ARCHIVED New Here - A Few Questions Re Tests
JakeARoosMommy replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just joined and I am so happy to know that I have people to identify with. My son Jacob Noah is 20 months old and tested positive to gluten intolerance. We went through a couple of stool samples and blood tests. I had Jake on a gluten free diet about a month before the blood work. The blood test exposes the blood samples to gluten to see if antibodies are...
