  1. Pete, I did have many of those same symptoms prior to my diagnosis. I have been gluten free for nearly a year and other than minor reflux, I no longer have those symptoms. Having said that, I am not a big fan of the Enterolab tests. It seems to me that nearly everyone who sends a sample in is either diagnosed with Celiac or gluten sensitivity. Me thinks...
  2. Mari, Well, it's a little harder when it's family. As for friends who behave this way, I just discard them. Period. I figure friends who are that ignorant and unsupportive are not worth having! This puts me in mind of one particular former friend who, upon learning of my diagnosis, took the same attitude as your daughter. This was after a 5 minute...
  3. Hi Karina, Thanks for mentioning you are a nurse. It makes it a little easier for me to tell you that my fear (based entirely on my non-medical knowledge!) is that it is small bowel lymphoma. Since you are a nurse, and since you have obviously done some research on this, you probably already know of the significant risk increase of this lymphoma to Celiac...
  4. MLO, no problem. I certainly understand, I was just trying to clear away some of the fog! I know what it is like. When I was first diagnosed, I knew nothing about this disease, since that time, I have been an information sponge - reading everything I can find on the topic. As for your daughter being a rarity because she was not diagnosed until 9, I...
  5. Karina, Have you mentioned this to your doctor? If not, please call him and tell him! I do not want to scare you, and I am not a doctor, but please mention this to him ASAP.
  6. Sorry, Suzn, I'm almost positive it is not. I had my local IRS office send me all the information relative to cafeteria plans (FSA is a cafeteria plan) and the medical deductions rules about 6 months ago. After reading through all this, I seem to remember it specifically said that cafeteria plans are only available to employees. I guess you could always...
  7. Tammy, This is fascinating! You had the (very expensive) genetic testing done and you do NOT have the gene? Yet the Enterolab test said you have Celiac? I have often questioned the validity of the Enterolab test. If my understanding of your post is correct, then the only conclusion I can draw is the Enterolab test is totally unreliable! All current...
  8. Hi Tasha, I don't have a definite yes or no answer, the best I can say is maybe! The only definitive test for Celiac is the endoscopic biopsy (camera down the throat). Even that is not foolproof, as the skill and experience of both the gastroenterologist taking the biopsies and the pathologist examining the biopsy slides are crucial. However, it is much...
  9. MLO, First, Gastro Duodenitis is not an ulcer. It is an inflamation of the stomach and the first portion of the small intestine called the Duodenum. While I am not familiar with inflamation of the stomach being related to Celiac (it might be, I've just never heard of it - I'm not a doctor), inflamation of the Duodenum certainly can be. However, several...
  10. Hi Christina, Can't help you with the running part, but I would recommend you speak to your doctor and a nutritionist about this. Try to seek out a knowledgeable nutritionist, they can be most helpful. Unfortunately, the nutritionist my doctor sent me to see knew less about the gluten-free diet than I did! I have recently found much more knowledgeable...
  11. SteveW, hopefully, your GI doc is following your progress closely. I don't mean to scare you, but there is an increased risk of small bowel lymphoma. Having said that, I will relay my story. It is a similar story to yours. I have been gluten-free nearly one year. I still have ups and downs, both physically and emotionally. My doctor was very concerned...
  12. Mario, this might be a little late, but do not forget to drink lots of water to replace the liquids you lost during the diarrhea bouts. Gatorade is good for this too as it contains essential electrolytes. Dehydration is a very real concern during times like this. Good luck!
  13. My endoscopy was also done under twilight sedation. No problems. Don't remember a thing! Very grogy when I woke up and for several hours after, but otherwise, felt fine. I would consent to having another one done tommorrow without hesitation. While there are no hard and fast symptoms for every Celiac, I would have to question your case - I would be surprised...
  14. Good explanation, Kim. I would only add that not all Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA's) permit the reimbursement of these costs. It is actually up to the employer to decide which medical expenses (including gluten free foods) are reimburseable. I have communicated with some Celiac patients who are not able to get reimbursement. In my own case, I called...
  15. Good news! Thanks! Has anyone tried the bunless burgers at Hardees? I contacted Hardees and they said they are gluten-free. I went to the local Hardees and ordered two of them (what can I say, I was hungry!). They were absolutely delicious!!! Only problem was, I got quite sick later that night. Can't say if it was from the burgers for sure, but I think...
  16. 1. Male. 2. Caucasian. 3. Have had symptoms since at least age 25 - 30. Was diagnosed at age 44. 4. 5'11" 160 lbs before, 5'11" 170 lbs now (about 9 months later). 5. Doctor diagnosed in 2003. 6. Upper G.I., Endoscopy (with biopsy), Colonoscopy, Celiac Panel blood test. 7. Just gluten right now, but doctor is suspecting possible lactose problems...
  17. A visual inspection with an endoscope may not always reveal Celiac. While there is normally some inflamation present, it is not always the case. Furthermore, any inflamation that may have been present could easily have been attributed to some other cause. You did not mention if biopsy samples were taken during the endoscopy. This is still the only sure...
