ARCHIVED Does Anyone Take Prevacid?
Chako replied to mart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A medicine like zantac would help to neutralize or reduce the acid but prevacid is so much more effective as it actually aids in closing the LES and thus preventing the wash of acid reflux back into the esophagus. It is a step up from a med like zantac as it has a different function from it. I have two sons on prevacid but we often use zantac alongside of... -
ARCHIVED Difference Between Celiac And Crohns?
Chako replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the reply! I thought it was along those lines but I wanted to make sure. He is to be scoped for an upper endoscopy and a lower sigmoidoscopy as well. The GI mentioned Celiac, IBS,, EE (eosiniphilic esophagitis), EGID, and I really can not recall if she said Crohns or not but the testing is all about his immune system and celiac and absorption... -
ARCHIVED Question About Potty Training And Possible Celiac Stools
Chako replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The really hard part about being on a board is that there is a stall between communication and as there is no intonation of voice or eye contact, etc. it is so hard sometimes to get a feel for a person when they post. I do not want you to think for an instant that we are being really hard on him for this as we are not. We are both being very supportive... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Take Prevacid?
Chako replied to mart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am still getting a handle on celiac here but I wonder again if he is suffering from constipation or just some reflux issues anyway. It is much worse for some children who have GI issues to begin with so that may be why the GI did give it to him. One thing for certain, response to the med shows that he needed it. Your GI may chose to wean him off... -
ARCHIVED Question About Potty Training And Possible Celiac Stools
Chako posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am sorry to ask so many questions but I am wondering about a particularly nasty aspect of what my son is going through. Since he was about 23 months old he developed a horrid diarrhea and we saw poop for days on end, sometimes 10 to 15 lovelies that would seriously drive you from the room, sometimes from the house. We ended up with an idiot GI who treated... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Take Prevacid?
Chako replied to mart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am not sure how it helps with Celiac but I am very GERD familiar as two of my sons are on prevacid and are GERDlings. Prevacid is a PPI, a proton pump inhibitor and it helps to close the valve at the top of the stomach called the LES or lower esophageal sphincter and thus preventing a wash of acid reflux from flying up the esophagus and irritating... -
ARCHIVED Difference Between Celiac And Crohns?
Chako posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am learning so much here and for that I thank you all. However as I have family members with celiac (one cousin) and one Aunt and cousin with crohns I am wondering what the difference is? I am researching it but there seems to be a lot of overlap. I get that celiac is the gluten problem but what I wonder is if the bloodwork is the same for both... -
ARCHIVED Question About "clubbing"
Chako replied to Chako's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting since on my side of the family thyroid disease runs rampant, even in the males. I have this problem as well, yet no clubbing. Every chance I get I make sure they check for a thyroid problem in my boys just to be sure as I was only 9 years old when my problem was found. -
ARCHIVED Ibs Leads To Other Diseases....
Chako replied to danikali's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am thinking this does not bode well for my 4 year old son. The GI we just met with said IBS was the least of the possibilities. I guess that means if nothing shows up on the scopes then we go with this as they have no clue. Great to know. Does the bloodwork for IBS run the same as for celiac? I mean the IgA and IgG in terms of levels? Do they... -
ARCHIVED Question About "clubbing"
Chako posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 4 year old has some clubbing of his fingers, but I am wondering if I am just looking for something that is not there. His toes however do seem to club but then again so do the toes of my other two sons as well. Plus, my husband has definate clubbing of his fingers, but I do not. I read this could be a genetic thing instead of a celiac thing too, correct... -
ARCHIVED Just Curious As To How You Achieved Diagnosis
Chako posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We are very GERD familiar here in our family and this can be often diagnosed easily by symptoms and by response to meds. The general feeling I am getting from looking around here is that many have either self diagnosed for Celiac based on symptoms and by response to a gluten free diet rather than waiting for biopsies and bloodwork. I understand you do not... -
We do have a bulk barn here and I worry big time about cross contamination (I assume that is what cc means?). We have had a few issues where we have needed to avoid all dairy for Curran and have definately had a reaction with foods from there and I suspected it was due to dairy. Too bad people in general do not adhere to wearing a glove and are not concious...

Fellow Canuck chiming in here from the Ottawa area and wondering where to go for good gluten free stuff, especially for a 4 year old child? Just want to do some research for it now please. Thanks! We mainly seem to shop at the Loblaws and have been directed to the Wheat Berry as well. Sounds a bit strange to go there for it, but so I have been told...

ARCHIVED Looking For Answers For My 4 Year Old Son Please
Chako replied to Chako's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh, I SO AGREE about doctors working in niches and not seeing the entire picture! It is so very frustrating. Nowdays it is up to the patient or advocate to be proactive and well versed themselves for what may be wrong. My Mother is a stroke survivor and I can not tell you how many times I have had to step in and direct the doctor to look in a direction... -
ARCHIVED Neurological Symptoms Help
Chako posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am looking around and see so much of my middle son here. I had no idea that neurological symptoms could be present as well. My husband and I call him our "perpetual motion boy" as he is constantly moving or twitching some body part. He is NOT ADHD. We went so far as to have him screened by a psychiatrist as we were sick of hearing about him being so... -
ARCHIVED New Here- My Story And Concerns
Chako replied to WorshipfulHeart's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I am new here and I had no idea that shampoos, etc are a source of gluten as well?! Seriously? Omigosh! How do I know if my stuff contains it as I am sure I will not find "gluten" on the package, right? My 4 year old always has dark circles under his eyes. We do not even see it anymore and whent the GI brought it up last week along with his... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Answers For My 4 Year Old Son Please
Chako replied to Chako's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
First of all THANK YOU for all your responses! It is wonderful to know we are not alone with this. We did not get diagnosis of GERD for my kids until my youngest hit the complications and was 14 months old. The one with the bowel problems is my middle son and I find things move way too slowly here for diagnosing at the best of times. I am in Canada and... -
ARCHIVED Low Immunoglobulin A, Other Test Negative.........
Chako replied to Homegirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am new to all this but I have come across information that states that being deficient with IgA can be an indicator or risk factor for celiac. I am sure someone else here will have the answer though. To scope or not to scope is always up to you and again through research it is considered the "gold standard" for diagnosis according to what I have read... -
ARCHIVED What Is "wasting" Or "wasted Buttocks"?
Chako replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow. My son looks like that. We were told by our last "GI" that his huge pot belly was due to stool holding. (He is not a stool holder by the way) and we are astounded by how this kid has absolutely NO butt. He needs a size 5 pant for length and yet needs a 3X or small 4 for waist. Shopping is not fun. I came across muscle wasting too and was wondering... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Answers For My 4 Year Old Son Please
Chako posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello. I am new to all this so please bear with me if it is a tad long. And I apologise for the TMI as well since it may be a bit graphic. My son was just turning 2 years old when horrid diarrhea hit and did not abate for months. Since that time his stools have always had a wretched stench to them (one would think you would get used to it in time...
