This is a serious disease.  PLEASE look up Dr. Steven Gundry and his book, The Plant Paradox.  I was so very sick 3 years ago. I was eating "gluten free", however, learned that with this autoimmune disease, you must stay away from grains and lectins!  I his book, he gives a list of what is safe to eat and what is NOT safe.  I have followed his diet and have not had a flare up.

People need to understand that gluten is only one TYPE of lectin.  Many fruits and vegetables, legumes, grains, have lectins!  So, please look up Dr. Steven Gundry and his book.  He will explain the danger of lectins and how they inflame your intestines.

    I wish you well.

Hi Mary Jean, if you can youtube, Dr. Steven Gundry is on youtube.

(He is a cardiologist.  Even though he doesn't have celiac disease, he also

does a lectin free, grain free, gluten free diet.)  In the search bar, just

write in Dr. Steven Gundry Plant Paradox diet or lectin free diet.  I forgot to mention, I also was anemic.  I am no longer anemic following his diet.

I am not trying to force anything.  It is your choice to get as much information as you possibly can and try and see what works best for you.

Like I said, I haven't had a flare up in 3 years every since his diet.

    I wish you well.

Just to clarify, potatoes are not a big "no no" for everyone. In this case the OP @Lizi seems to do quite well with potatoes, and given her dietary restrictions there is no need to avoid them if she has no issues with them. I eat potatoes, tomatoes and chili peppers almost daily, and have zero issues with them.

Some people are "gluten sensitive" and others who have celiac disease and DH react differently.  I thought I had no problems with potatoes for years actually.  Until my skin burst out with huge blistery welts years later.  But,

every person is different.  Same thing with tomatoes and chili peppers. Glad you have no problem with them.

    Welcome to the forum!

There is definitely a strong minority of those with celiac disease who also seem to do poorly whenever they eat any type of grain. Since you are also vegan this can pose extra challenges for you to get enough nutrients, so you may also want to take a good vitamin/mineral supplement.

I believe potatoes are one of the few vegetables that you can survive on for long periods, without eating other foods. Some people have issues with nightshades, and potatoes are in that group, but since you don't potatoes might be the best base for your grain-free diet. You may also want to consider sweet potatoes as well.

FYI: This article discusses nutrient deficiencies in more detail:

    Hi Scott,

I absolutely stay away from grains. As far as potatoes, they are a big "no no".  They fall int the "night shade" family.  Night shades have lectins which are very harmful to people with autoimmune disease.  You can look up "The Plant Paradox" by Dr. Steven Gundry.  He explains in great detail on lectins are bad for our intestines.  You may eat "roots" like: yams, sweet potatoes, or taro.  I have been following his diet for 3 years now...no flare ups!  You may also google his "Yes and No List" of what is afe and what is not.

See if you can find Cassava pasta.  No lectins.  It is made from a root, so it is safe.  Also, if you eat beef or chicken, make sure it is "grass fed" beef or chicken that organic.  If animals eat grains, it will pass on the grain to your system.  Hope this helps.  I know how hard this is.  Believe me.  I was so very sick and swollen, migraines, muscle and joint pain, blistery rash.

Ever since I followed the lectin free diet, I am so much better.  Hope this helps.

I was told that South Africans donot get celiac

That only White people from developed countries get celiac,  so how on earth did I get it ?

I was told that celiac is genetic,  my biological father is an American

Wow, thanks!!  Now, if I can get rid of this feeling of having a vise around my head every time I get cross-contamination and 3-4 days of brain fog I'll be okay!!  Haha.

You might try staying away from anything with lectins.  Gluten is just "one type" of lectin.  Go and check out Dr. Steven Gundry's "Yes and No list"...I followed this diet (lectin free) and man, what a difference.

  7. Hi there!  I hope this helps you.

I have Celiac disease and DH for 15 years now.  I am 65.

I was on a very strict "gluten free" diet for years and kept having setbacks.  (That's what I call them).  I had daily migraine headaches, terrible rash, muscular pain, joint pain, loss of balance, hair falling out, and the list goes on.  Oh yes, and may I add to that...weight gain.  I was really swollen.

I was a nurse years ago, and I knew the doctors weren't really well informed about this disease.  All they say:  "stay away from gluten"...and I was, however, continued to be sick!

I had to figure this out.  Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease.  I researched until I found what the problem was.

Gluten is just ONE TYPE of LECTIN.  Many other foods have LECTINS!!!  So, I went on a Lectin free diet and within weeks...yes...weeks...my inflammatory symptoms disappeared!!!!  Lectins are POISON to those of us with ANY type of autoimmune disease.  Why don't most doctors know this???  Because they treat patients with medications and don't really study nutrition.  This is sad but true.

I have been on a lectin free diet for 4 months now and feel like a new human being!  I have lost 25 lbs...all of that was swelling due to inflammation.  I no longer have migraines, all of my joint pain, muscular pain...all the rash...gone!!!!!!!!

My favorite source is Dr. Steven Gundry...he is a well know cardiologist and the only one I know of, that stepped out of the box to research lectins and how bad they are and why.

I hope this helps you.  If you have a thyroid issue, this may be another autoimmune issue for you, so you really want to look into staying lectin free.  I realize this is hard...I have to cook all of my own foods and bake my own bread, etc., but I am feeling healthy and like a new human being.  Dr. Gundry is on youtube…I hope you at least give this a try...the results will be worth it!

  8. Hi there...I have DH and Celiac disease...for over 15 years now.  As we know, Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease.

I was on a very strict gluten free diet but kept getting setbacks, (rash, muscular pain, joint pain, migraines, loss of balance).

Keep in mind now, gluten is one type of LECTIN.  So, I went on a LECTIN free diet and within weeks all symptoms gone!!!  No nightshade vegetables, no beans or legumes, (no peanuts or cashews as they are legumes), no corn, no rice....these are grains...they have lectins.  All these cause inflammation for those of us with an autoimmune disease.  Make sure you look up lectin free diets...!

Yes, it is a very hard diet to follow, however, if you want to stop your inflammation setbacks, this will do it!!!  I feel like a new human being.  When you have an autoimmune disease, lectins are deadly for us.  Please, I urge all of you to do your homework on this...because doctors really aren't informed.

  9. Oh I totally agree with you!  Biopsies sometimes come back negative...I have researched...and I decided not to have a biopsy because I will get so sick if I eat gluten and that's what they require before the biopsy.

I agree with you not wanting to subject your daughter to that.  I would keep her on a strict gluten-free diet  (not just food...but soaps, shampoos, check them for gluten as well.)  My body wash had gluten!!!  So did my shampoo.

Is she lactose intolerant?  I am...so I wondering if she has a problem with lactose?  Gluten is just BAD for humans period.  I have listened to many doctors (on youtube) who have researched it for many years.  Your daughter is better off without it.  I hope she improves and take care!

  10. Hi there...Not sure...I have had to go through the same process trying to figure out how I got zapped with gluten...and it's no fun.

Here's a question...are you being careful with other products that have gluten, such as shampoo, hair color, body wash, toothpaste, make up, and things like that???  Lots of those products have gluten, so beware.

Also, I got VERY sick after eating gluten-free tacos.  I wondered WHY?

Well, I learned that CORN is a grain that contains Prolamines and Prolamines can set off a reaction.  Oats are also high in Prolamines...even if they say gluten free...they are Grains...and if they are high in Prolamines, you may get a reaction.  Now that I have stayed away from grains that are high in Prolamines...I have been fine!  I learned that from Dr. Osborne...he's on youtube.  He has a lot of videos on Gluten and celiac disease.

    Hope this helps!

  11. Hi there,

I have had DH for years now...was very careful with my food...made sure it was gluten-free.  Here's the thing...I kept having outbreaks of the rash & blisters...then realized my body wash had gluten!  My hair color and shampoo also had gluten...everything has to be checked when it comes to ingredients...not just food.  So...just wanted to inform you of that.

Also, beware of grains...corn and oats...they are high in prolamines and that can set off a reaction...wheat is very high in prolamines...but corn and oats are too...so be careful.  Now that I have monitored those grains and the other stuff...I have been okay.  No rash for 8 months.
