You, Too?

Whenever people inquire about why I don't eat bread or why I'm eating what I'm eating, I give a generic response that I'm allergic to flour and it's hidden in everything---Just so people don't think I'm another FRUITY or NUTTY California Tree hugger and/or hypochondriac. But some people ask more about it and then I explain that it's not an anaphylactic allergy and that it's a genetic disease that is highly undiagnosed due to the wide range of symptoms and the ignorance of doctors who misdiag

Wreaking Halloween Havoc: My First Time In A Police Car

It began at 7:30 PM and ended at 7:30 AM. I kinda thought I'd picked the lesser of two evils by opting to see my friend's husband's band play for Halloween, and not going to the party where I knew my ex-boyfriend from 2 years ago would be. You decide: I had a blast in my St. Pauli Girl costume, dancing (extra fun to shake my mini crinoline-clad booty) with the wives of the band dudes, doing raspberry kamikaze shots, and complimenting people's costumes. It was fun when dudes would shout,

Work Pot Luck Luncheon For Boss' Day

The luncheon at work was easy. I ate fruit, a tamale, spanish rice,-- and the peppers with hummus that I brought. Not bad. The only thing that looked yummy that I couldn't have was the soup someone made and the brownies someone made. Not for me! Because I'm SSSSSPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least I happened upon the gluten-free brand name candy list on this site, so I raided the drugstore for candy that I thought was off limits before: Chunky bar, Trolli sour gummy worms, gummy li

Whatta Day

Unfortunately for me I was ahead on a project at work and what does one of my teammates do? He tells the boss we'll be done a week early!-Meaning I had to work nonstop and late to finish it in time for Monday and so did the secretary. whatta jerk. THEN, I'm driving home and there's an ambulance, so I pull over. I'm looking in the rearview at the PT Cruiser behind me and she pulls over, too BUT THEN she hits my car! I think I'm ok, and there didn't appear to be damage, but I wrote the info.do

Wanna Have Your Baby

A man shouted, "Andy, I wanna have your baby!" at the Indian Wells quarterfinal where I was watching (with my tongue hanging out, lustingly) Andy Roddick beat Ljubicic in two sets with two tiebreaks in 80 degree evening weather with a nice breeze. Loved. It. Afterwards, in the perfect finale to this starry evening, I retracted the top in the Benz (MB is the tournament sponsor that gave me the ticket discount) and smelled my FAVORITE scent ever on the way home-- ORANGE BLOSSOMS!! A precursor t

Victory At El Torito

One word: Enchiladas! I had steak enchiladas and they were muy bien! I had no problemas getting my dance on afterward, either! I ordered normally but cautioned the waiter about being allergic to wheat and later he made a joke about how did I enjoy the flour tortillas. haha Whatever. It was cool. I defrosted berry pancakes for breakfast today (yum) and ate M&Ms, carrots, tuna w/mayo&dill, and potato chips for lunch, and for dinner I'm cooking pea soup and also baked apples from my glu

Vacation Wanes

We discovered a new favorite song on our Cozumel island adventure, "Besa Me Mucho". We heard it at the musical show at our all-inclusive resort-- while the performers were singing, much to my surprise, mi novio (bf) started to sing along (he remembered the song from his CA Boys Choir Days -where he sang alongside Lenny Kravitz). My knees were like butter.... So at dinners in the downtown (outdoor dining) we paid the walk-up musicians to serenade us throughout the trip...great memory. We were

Unbirthday Cake

Got lilies and roses delivered at work for my bday, which was a surprise. Got some nice phone calls and nice gifts. BUT NO CAKE. A friend put a candle in a gluten-free donut, but it wasn't the same. I'll have to go to the store and buy a gluten-free cake mix. There are good ones out there, but it's not as fun to make it yourself and eat it yourself. Last year, a pal mailed me a cake she baked gluten-free. I've never been that big on frosting, but I've always loved cake. Something about a b

Turkey Week-i Could Make A Movie From This.

Totally Gluten-Free turkey day again, but this time at my house with my Major's mother and my mom&stepdad all in from FL We did lots of fix-it stuff on my new house (bank repo) Parents woke at 4am (FL time 7am) and went to 24 hr Wal-Mart to buy me "appropriate" dishes and silverware (mine isn't heavy enough) for my belated birthday gifts.   My stepdad forgot to take his blood pressure meds on Tuesday (day 3)and blew his top and went MIA in the rental car. Didn't hear from him till Wed.

Traveling Again

*Drum roll* Did she make a long weekend trip in Washington D.C. without getting glutened?NO. Positives: there was a WHOLE FOODS where they had an omelette lady we took advantage of for breakfast and we bought stuff for picnicking! I ate at Joe Theisman's restaurant (salad and bunless roast beef) and it was FANTASTIC. So, we ate there the next night, and...glutened! But, I have to admit the house balsamic vinegrette dressing I tried this time looked suspect, and I dared to eat chocolate mousse

Tofu Yum-e

I got FAT over Xmas! Two weeks in IL with Gramma and MOM cooking "special" for me and mom& her bf taking me out to eat (they'd go twice a day, not me- once a day was my eat-out limit!) But, I felt like I had to eat the desserts my gram made--a little each day, since nobody else ate any "special" food. 9 lbs later, my clothes are tight! But now I've lost 4 of the pounds already. Just being back to my normal routine and workouts. But having a big fat bust is kinda fun! Every time I look d

The Ritz...almost Perfect

I had a pretty nice dinner at The Ritz this weekend. I enjoyed the seafood appetizer with horseradish and shrimp sauce, the lobster salad, and the shrimp c%$#$tail. The lamb was ok. The mashed potatoes and veggies fine. The berries for dessert were fresh, but had a VANILLA WAFER stuck in there, so I only ate a few out of the other side. ALMOST perfect. Plus, there had to be a person at the table who couldn't resist telling me how good my berries looked while he was downing his chocolate cake

The Risk Does Have A Reward!

Girls nite out dancing last night and the band was really cool. Now that my hair is long (had short hair a la Charlize and Dixie Chicks in my 20s and decided to grow it last Xmas when I turned 30) it's hot on the dance floor! I'm glad celiac hasn't inhibited my hair's ability to grow fast! I had one drink, a Jack Daniel's with Coke. But, I got tired! So sad that my bod tires before my tootsies! In 3 inch heels! I should have fake carb loaded b4 hand! My pal was dying to crash a reunion

The Big Easy

Yearning for some FRIED fish on my impending trip to New Orleans where it's common to only use corn meal to fry it mmmmm! Emeril is from there and has a restaurant, so that could be cool, too. My cowboy (who is stationed out here in the Marines, but orig. from N'Awlins) informed me that I MUST eat crawdaddy's and SUCK the head. He pantomimed a demonstration, so I'll let you know how it goes. Gal Pals want to try HerbSaint. They are originally from N.O., but lived out in Cali w/me for the las

Tahini To Go

Signed up to bring an appetizer for a work luncheon. Wanted to bring cheese and sausage, but the sausage was not looking like it was going to be allowable for me. SO, I glanced over and saw some HUMMUS and realized I haven't had that in YEARS. So, I bought some bell peppers and there we go! Sliced red, green, and yellow bell peppers with black olives and hummus! Sweet! However, I did not have the courage to slice them in the food processor, since I'm not totally adept at that tool yet- and

Summer Slump :(

July was terrible for me last year and it's the same again this year. Where to begin...well, amazingly enough, I can make an entire LIST! 1. I didn't get the promotion at work. 2. They didn't throw out my duplicate traffic light camera ticket ($387) 3. My grandma wrote me a letter saying thanks for taking care of her during my visit, but no more gifts- even for Christmas, and btw I HATE YOUR MOTHER and I never want to see her again (My mom's moving to FL away from my gram in WI- gram not takin

Struck By The Glutenous Bolt Of Misery

Amy's Soup. I'd read about people reacting to it, but I had already bought it and some people are allergic to ingredients I am ok with. So I tried some one day and I was fine. Ate the rest the next day (potato leek?)yum. Then I had the tomato kind. I guess I'm just glad I get off work at 3, because I can go home and be glutenly grouchily greenily grumbly gross and grim all by myself. But the next two days I was feeling sluggish--- funny the theme for Just Say No Week at school was "Drugs mak

Spontaneous Spells...

Just an "aha!" first---I CAN DRINK WOODCHUCK CIDER at the bar! YIPPEE!!! Plus, Chi-town has LOTS of gluten-free BEERS I plan on trying out for the first time...I'll let ya know how it all goes! These are important for meeting my goal of not talking or explaining about my diet much on the trip so I can try to take a bit of a mental vacation from my disease! Spontaneous Spells...Trouble? So, when I'm planning a trip, I try to empty the fridge and not cook the day of my flight...and since I'm go

Simply Organic Cocoa Brownies (Gluten-Free)

I tweeted this product review-Twitter at Gluten Free Bree-My bf's mom gave me a box of Simply Organic gluten-free cocoa brownie mix as part of a gluten free goodie package she mailed me for taking care of her son after his shoulder surgery. It was very easy to mix up, just stir in melted butter and eggs! It's certified organic, meaning the production of the sugar, cocoa, etc. is done without chemicals, hormones, pesticides, etc. Find more of my reviews at my new blog on glutenfreebreeze at

Silly Yak

I rode the Silly Yak and avoided a gluten attack. As I suspected and expected, my midwest jaunt to spend quality time with my grandma (and mother and aunt- all of us traveled from both coasts and gathered in one tiny house with my grandma's mentally disabled brother- in support of my grandma's terminal diagnosis with cancer) did turn out to be ultra celiac-friendly. The marvelous trip to Bunky's Pizza (Madison, WI, area) where I indulged in fabulous gluten-free pizza-I chose shrimp and swapped

Sides Of Me...

Gluten-Free Me... ...gives Mucho Kudos to Chex Cereal (recently gone gluten free) for listing an informational blurb on the side of its box now that explains celiac disease as a "multi-symptom autoimmune disorder...estimated 1 in 133 Americans suffer from...", and it goes on to list a celiac website and has the logo for the Celiac Disease Foundation. ...got to participate in a luncheon at work! It was "build a salad". I can't say I liked it that much. I like expensive stuff, like spinach, r

Shoulder Bouncing Laughter

We're at the hotel bar area chatting with fellow vacationers, when my bf whispers to me, "This lady thinks I'm a pro-athlete." This is typical, so I wondered why he looked so flustered. I say, "Did you tell her you're not?" He says, "Yes, but she won't take no for an answer. She thinks I'm trying to be private." fyi, the Detective in 6'3" and slim with broad shoulders, and often gets "noticed" by onlookers (at airport or concerts, usually) as a potential professional athlete-someone they

Should've Trusted My Gut

Enjoyed a cool techno teacher conference in Palm Springs this weekend. Yes, I was hungry and annoyed after eating a bunless burger and NONE of the divinely greasy and thick onion rings my compadres ordered at lunch. (red meat still isn't a treat for me, it's merely tolerable.) At night I Dined on the lovely, warm patio in a Tex-Mex restaurant. Palm Springs has a large gay community, so it was noticeable that all of the waiters we had all weekend seemed very effeminate (sp?). Well, when I asked

Sea Fare

Hola! Back from Mexico! 10 teachers + 1 ship + tequila - kids = GOOD TIMES! Twas a nice first 4 days of the 2 week spring break! Carnival had a MANAGER come to my table the first night and explain what I could eat for the first two dinners. She said they'd make me special desserts... but much to my disappointment they didn't the first night...miscommunication between the waiters and the kitchen??? who knows. YES it was PAINFUL watching all 9 of my shipmates relish their chocolate souffle

S'mores! And More

Kinnickinnick gluten-free Graham Crackers + chocolate + marshmallows = Yum to the Oh Yeah! I never thought my trigger would be tripped by a plain ol' graham cracker! I have yet to master the way I got it once to be soft and warm in the microwave. They are no where near chalky. So nice. Unfortunately, I also laid my hands on some Andean Dream Quinoa Cookies-yuck...aside from $ down the drain, they're a waste of calories in the sweets allowance, so I spit it out. Also sampled St. Amour Bro
