I stopped eating gluten and when I put it back into my diet this week, (I have been off my period for a week btw) my nipples got sore and my breasts enlarged, they are so swollen, I can't hug anyone without wanting to cry. I have been lactating from them (only with manual squeezing, and a lot comes out) for over 12 years and NO doctor has come up with any answers! I have what is known as gallactorea, though. Sorry for the horrible spelling.

While I incorporated gluten back in, I also brought 3 percent milk back in and I hadn't had it in forever, but, my breasts were still swollen without dairy a week before my period like clock work, per usual and yes, I was eating gluten still. Is this actually a symptom?

Other problems: My period was way too light this time, and ten days late! I don't understand this GRR! :(

I had numerous tsh and prolactin tests years ago, while ttc. All normal. But immediately after childbirth went into a thyroid tailspin. I know, in retrospect, I was starting issues but it just wasn't showing up on labs.

You should ask for thyroid, prolactin, and hormone tests. Something's going on there. It's normal for periods to vary, even when you're younger...but sudden lasting changes need to be investigated.

And yes, if you have a gluten issue and go gluten-free, then add it back, your body can suffer all sorts of systemic reactions.

If not eating it makes it go away and eating it causes it again, no matter what the symptom is, then that food is a problem for you. Also, I feel very badly for you, not that that helps anything!

If you think it's the dairy, eliminate both the gluten and dairy and then add only 1 back, not both. It does require will power and will take time, but I think it's worth it.

      This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

      Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

      NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.

      I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
