Better In Some Ways, Worse In Others?

I've been gluten-free since April 21st of this year. Lots of things have improved. My skin is clear (I have DH), my headaches are almost gone, my GI symptoms are gone, people keep telling me that I look healthier as well.

The problem is that I seem to be getting sicker in other ways. I feel tired a lot, and achey. I get sick ALL the time. My immune system must be in the toilet, because I've been sick pretty much non-stop since July. I get over one thing and get hit with another.

I used to get sick frequently before going gluten-free, but this is ridiculous. I thought that going gluten-free would make me more resistant to illness and infection, but it appears to be quite the opposite.

I've been to my doctor and she can't find anything in my bloodwork.

Has anyone else experienced this?

If you're actually repeatedly getting sick (infection-wise), you might try an infectious disease specialist, or someone who specializes in immune system issues.

Yeah, I'm getting repeatedly sick and getting infections (like boils and infected cuts). It's brutal. I'm seeing my GP this week, I'll ask her about a specialist.

Have you had your B12 levels checked. Many celiacs have a very hard time with B-12 levels and maybe your iron too. Ask the specialist about having these levels checked. My iron is low right now and I am cold all the time. Feel better hun! Deb

Deb, no I haven't had my B12 checked recently at all. I do take a daily B12 sublingual, but possibly I could be taking too little. I know that my iron is low and my dermo said that low iron can contribute to getting sores/boils.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.
