Gluten Reaction In My 2 1/2 Year Old

so . . . i'm trying to piece some information together and wanted to see what happens with others. my daughter has been gluten-free for almost three months and this is the first time this has happened. she went to bed last night really gassy and not feeling too well. she woke up with diarreah about two hours later and then threw up. this happened again three hours later. she had no fever and made it through the rest of the night without incident. i'm guessing she got some gluten soemwhere, but i don't know if this is a common reaction. my other trick is trying to figure out the timing. is this a reaction from something she ate yesterday, or is this maybe something that builds up.

as is write this, my mind is spinning trying to figure out where this came from, and i'm fighting the common guilty feelings. :-)

any other experiences would be greatly appreciated.

thanks so much!

I am not sure how others react or if there is a difference between adults and children. That said I know within two hours if I have been glutened. It starts with very loud rumbly stomach, progresses to horrible intestinal cramps and then goes into the big d. For me it seems to take almost a month to recover. Some days I seem okay and then more d. Is there possible cross contamination? This is always a possiblility in my home. Try not to feel too guilty. Being a parent I know it is hard not to.

that sounds about like my daughter's reactions... usually within several hours of eating something with gluten or cross contamination.

There are so many hidden glutens in things, it can be really tricky. We are soooo careful and still occasionally have accidental glutenings. Sometimes we don't figure out what caused it.

Does anybody know of a guide that ranks reevaluates universities and colleges in terms of their accommodation of celiac disease or food allergies?   Thanks in advance for any leads! Valerie

thank you, i have been doing that the last few weeks and will continue to do so. I had not had my ttg iga checked since I was diagnosed 14 yrs ago so I am not sure if they ever dropped below the 15-20 range.    all my other labs are completely normal but I am concerned that this may be signs of refractor celiac or something else since I'm so careful with gluten-free diet

Around 9% of celiacs cannot tolerate any oats, even gluten-free oats. It might be worth eliminating them for a few months, then get re-tested.

I only eat certifed gluten-free products but a lot of which are processed. Could there be trace gluten in those or is that very unlikely?

For people with celiac disease hidden gluten in their diets is the main cause of elevated Tissue Transglutaminase IgA Antibodies (tTG-IgA), but there are other conditions, including cow's milk/casein intolerance, that can also cause this, and here is an article about the other possible causes (you may want to avoid oats):
