Cheese Grater

So I have a flat cheese grater but I wanted to get the box kind that has fine grate on one side, coarser grate on the other. Then I think one of the narrow sides slices and I can't even remember what the fourth side does. But you know what I mean. It's the kind our mothers all had.

Anyway, I went to the only department store in town - Shopko, where I get my gluten-free vitamins. They had one and I was so happy to spot it. Then I saw the price. SEVENTEEN DOLLARS AND NINETY NINE CENTS!!!! (plus tax of course.) The same cheese grater can be bought at Walmart for $3.24! I wrote to Shopko and complained. This is what I wrote:

"Last night I went to my local Shopko in search of a cheese grater. I found one for $17.99. It is the same one I could get at Walmart for $3.24!! Here is a link to prove it: Open Original Shared Link

I would LOVE to shop locally but as Hot Springs, S.D. has only a Shopko, I have no choice but to run to Rapid City and buy my cheese grater at Walmart. And of course to make it worth my time and gasoline, I will be buying other things I need while I'm there instead of at my local Shopko.

I'm sorry, but it is an outrage that because Shopko is the only store in town you feel you can charge almost SIX TIMES AS MUCH for an item than can be gotten elsewhere. I am insulted and disgusted.

If you would bring your prices more in line with what the generality of stores charge I'm sure you would be doing a booming business. But the parking lot is always nearly empty and your insulting prices are the reason!"

And this is the response I just got back:

"Thank you for contacting Shopko. I apologize that you are unhappy with the Shopko store pricing.

Thank you for the feedback, we will make sure and pass that to the appropriate department.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Barbie

GRRRR!!! It makes me so mad that these people are gouging the locals like that. Especially when you consider this is a retirement town and old folks don't WANT to drive a 120 mile round trip to Rapid city and back.

I could probably buy one and pay for shipping to you for less than that!  I have one that I paid more than $4 for but it is big and a bit "nicer" than the smaller ones (I have one of those, too).  Maybe I should just send you my littler one?  It works fine for $4.

I guess you should just make a list and go to Walmart - TP, paper towels, shampoo, cheese grater, underwear, etc.  lol

How about a yard sale one? Do you think I would be able to clean it well enough just in case a used one was glutened?

Put it in the dishwasher.  I don't think people use them for bread?  Mine cleans well in the dishwasher - so why not?

Don't have a dishwasher, but if I soak it and clean it well it should be OK i guess.

Just an aside, did you notice the poor grammar in the reply? "I apologize that you are unhappy", and "make sure and pass that along". THAT'S who they have representing their company to the public? Even the initial message in the "contact us" box had, "one of our representative" (no "S" on the end). Do you think maybe these messages go to China or India?

Maybe you could contact them about the grammar?  lol

I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.

Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.
