Question Regarding Dh Symptoms.

Does DH always itch?  I have had a recurring full-body rash for the last few months.  I have seen a few dermatologists with no success.  While the rash is full-body, it is primarily vesicular on the hands/feet (and to a far lesser degree on the arms).  Moreover, while the rash is generally very itchy, the vesicular parts itch only a very little (little enough that I'm generally unbothered).

Has anyone with confirmed DH ever had the vesicular parts of their rash not itch?

My dh rash vesicular or not always itches - sometimes itches/burns/stings or any combination of the three or two.

Sorry. Just to clarify: you're saying that your DH rash is always itchy and varies between itching, burning and stinging?

kareng Grand Master

I think Dh is always blistery and itches.  I think the amount of itchiness may just depend on each person's ability to tolerate it.

"Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is an itchy, blistering skin condition that’s a form of celiac disease. The rash usually occurs on the elbows, knees and/or buttocks, and is characterized by its bilateral nature; both knees (and/or both arms) are affected, seldom just one. Many people with DH have no digestive symptoms and only about 40% of them have the positive blood tests (serology) for celiac disease. However, they almost always have the same, gluten-dependent intestinal damage as those with the more common symptoms of celiac disease."

Not sure if we have any currently active members with skin biopsy diagnosed DH?

It can be just itchy or it can be itching & stinging or it can be itching, stinging & burning or it can be itchy & burning. HOWEVER I am now over 3years gluten-free and the few rashes I have no longer itch (or sting or burn) like a mutha all the time. They never burn anymore at all.

I am not skin biopsy dx'd but am dx'd with celiac based upon symptoms & resolution. My GI dx'd me & said it is dh.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
