glutened - how to stop the Diarrhea

Hello all, I am new to this site but have had celiac spru ( disease ) for ten years now. I thought I was doing good, but I obviously am not. I am having a horrible attack right now, as bad as the first one. I also have MC. I must have got contaminated somehow. I realize now that I absolutely cannot rely on products that say gluten free anymore. I believe I am just to sensitive now. How do you stop the  relentless diarrhea? I have taken a ton of anti diarrhea pills but the beast is still roaring in my belly and out...of it. Help! Any suggestions? I can't even make it to the toilet, so I sleep next to the bathroom now to avoid accidents in bed. Can't eat or drink ANYTHING or it gets worse. Had anyone dealt with this? I feel so alone and scared it will never stop. Thanks in advance,

Christine

Sounds like you might have a bad stomach virus or something else.  IF this goes on for more than a couple of days, you need to get to a doctor.

Thanks Karen, these symptoms I am having are exactly like the first time I experienced it. I didn't know I had celiac disease then, but after a month of agony I was diagnosed via biopsy. The difference now is I eat gluten free. I ate at a pizza place that  serves gluten free pizza earlier this evening and at two in the morning I woke to a lets just say unpleasant issue. I must have got cross contaminated. No matter what I do it won't stop. Do you know of anything other than Imodium to stop the D?

Thanks so much,

Christinr

Hi Christine,

You may want to ask this on a separate topic if you want more replies, but in the meantime how are you with dairy? Could be food poisoning and cross contamination is one possibility but there will be dairy in the gluten-free pizza and after a few years gluten-free I've only recently realised that dairy isn't just something I need to mostly avoid but I have to cut it out completely.

A few ways. There's a quote reply button under posts, or you can highlight the text and press the quote this popup that appears.

I split this to its own topic.

I couldn't tell by your first post if you had this going on for days, weeks or just a few hours.

Sounds like some cc on that pizza.

IF a Pizza place offers both gluten and gluten-free pizza....you have a extreme chance of CC, consider the prep area, the flour dusting, the reaching from gluten pizza to topping bins and back, the ladle used to put hte sauce on and spread it from one pizza to another, the pizza peel they use to put in and remove the pizza the cutters.....so many areas where a untrained personal can make a mistake and CC you.

Other thoughts dairy is a HUGE issue for many cealics, especially right after a gluten exposure. The tips of the villi help with the enzymes to break down dairy....damaged tips and you do not get enough of the enzyme and D, gas etc ensue. Best to avoid it for a bit again after a gluten exposure. For me it is a life time avoidance......

Thoughts for helping to firm up stool. Ground flax seed in food/beverages adds bulk and thickens up stool, coconut flour is also good for this in a baked good, or porridge, Pea Protein is high in iron and can help form up stools (NOT DEPENDS ON BRAND) I use Growing Naturals often and found the 30% DV iron in it is great. Avoid Sugars, starches, fruit, for now to keep gas down, and for god sake stay away from spices or you WILL feel the burn. Go with herb seasonings for awhile....

I use Great Plains Bentonite Clay to stop the diarrhea. Works quickly for me.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
