Sleeplessness In 10 Year Old

Hi. My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease when she was 3. She has been on a gluten-free diet since then and has been doing great. I just had her blood levels rechecked and everything came out good. Last spring she started having trouble falling asleep at night. We tried reading, playing music, and talking to the school psyshologist but nothing seemed to work. Over the summer we didn't seem to have any issues--maybe because she was up a little later. When school started this fall we extended her bedtime 1/2 hour and everything went well for about 3 weeks. Then we had trouble falling asleep again. She lays in bed and cries because she can't fall asleep. This has happened again in November and again now in January. My gut feeling is this is somehow related to her celiac. Does anyone else have a child who is having trouble sleeping and what have you done about it?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Melissa

My son is only 2 and a half. He has never slept well. He was diagnosed at 15 months. He woke up every hour or two and sometimes less for the entire first two year of his life. Some nights were better than others. I honestly thought my life was over. He is doing better in the past few months, but still not the best sleeper and doesn't nap. He wakes up crying often and scratching alot. He has been gluten free now for over a year. He has eczma, but my gut feeling has been it is somehow related to the celiac. I don't know. I have no idea if night waking and trouble sleeping is related to celiac, but I would sure like to know!

Hi,

Thanks for your input. Emily has never slept well. When she was an infant she would sleep in 15 minute increments and gave up her nap long before she was 2. She never really slept through the night until she was in her own bed at the age of 2. She used to be up early in the morning, but now would sleep in every day if I let her. She also has some dry skin, but I don't think it's eczema. We visitied with some friends this weekend and their 11 year old daughter has also had sleep issues her whole life. After speaking to several people I have decided to make an appointment with a naturalpath who is versed in celiac and see what he thinks. I will keep you posted.

Night-waking is a sign that there may be another food allergy or intolerance going on....usually dairy or soy. My dd is almost 3 and if she has the slightest amount of dairy, she will wake up during the night or have trouble napping. The best way to check is to pull out dairy for at least 3-4 days to see if there is a difference. If there is, eliminate it from your diet. If not, repeat the process with other foods commonly consumed in your house.

Hope that you all get some sleep soon!

I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.

TTG IgA reference range 0.0 to 14.9 KU/L

What was the reference range for that test? Each lab uses different reference ranges so a raw score like that makes it difficult to comment on. But it looks like a rather large number.

I have had the tTG-IgA blood test my result are >250.0  I am waiting for the appointment with the gastroenterologist for endoscopy and biopsies.    what are the chances it’s not coeliacs.  waiting and not knowing is so hard. Especially the eating of gluten knowing it may be causing you more harm and coping with the symptoms.
