Terrible itching with no rash

My father has been suffering terribly with itching over most of his body but he doesn’t have any rash.  One characteristic of his itching is that it often is mirrored on each side of his body. So for example if his right arm starts itching his left will begin to itch in the same place.  I was told that he may have celiac.  Can anyone provide me any input that may help?

People with celiac disease sometimes have DH (dermatitis herpetiformis).  DH is a very itchy rash that is symetrical on the body.  Perhaps he is in the early stages of developing DH.

This may sound odd, but I described to my Dr ( I had consistent symptoms before a rash breaks out visibly on me)

I itch underneath my skin in the layers below. I describe it as above my muscles but below my outermost skin -not close to the surface. It follows the path of blood circulation starts on my right.

Earlier years I would feel this (this was years after my PUPPP rash issues which later researchers say erupt in celiacs) the DH would erupt on my right elbow first them my left following the sensation I described.

I know it's sounds odd to most people. If he is describing  itching after eating gluten it makes sense to me  based on my experiences.

I had 4 years naively self enduced gluten-free and in hindsight I noticed these symptoms when I got cc during my initial gluten-free stage.

So yes, I believe he possibly can feel the immune system ramping up underneath the outermost layer of skin.  My symptoms often were missed and/or misdiagnosed ( happens to many of us)

Is it possible to get him tested?

I’ve used tinctures and made my own edibles with gluten-free ingredients to stay safe. Dispensary staff don’t always know about gluten, so I double-check labels or just make my own.

It's great to hear that there are some good doctors out there, and this is an example of why having a formal diagnosis can definitely be helpful.

Update: I have a wonderful new gastroenterologist. She wants to be sure there’s nothing more serious, like refractory celiac, going on. She ordered various tests including some micronutrient tests that no one has ever ordered before.  I’m deficient in folate and zinc and starting supplements for both. I’m so glad I decided to go to a new GI!

Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster. Many of them are found close together on the chromosomes.

Just giving another update... I was referred to rheumatology, and they suspect that I may also be dealing with fibromyalgia (it has not been formally diagnosed, but just suggested at this point).  So, I am continuing with the anti-inflammatory diet and vitamins and still working to keep getting rid of all these hidden gluten sources, but I also do have another possible explanation for some of the issues that I'm dealing with.
