Possible celiac - problems on/off for a few months

Hi guys,

So last night I went out for a few beers with work friends, this is a rarity these days, even more rare was the fact I had 4 and a bit pints - I'm not a drinker, not usually on an empty stomach (as was the case last night), so this was a lot for me. I felt fine, drunk, but fine, got home around 10pm and lay down and went to sleep, woke up around 3am with the most awful stomach pains, hot flashes, sweats but then I was freezing, I was also dry heaving, these episodes came maybe 4 or 5 times between 3 and 4 (lasting about a minute or two each time), until finally I threw up and was fine to go back to sleep. Today I feel dehydrated as hell.

I was bulking for gym (eating quite a large calorie surplus) from around January to June, however in June at some point I started having really bad gas, and diarrhoea for days at a time. I'm now on antidepressants (unrelated), but the diarrhoea seems to have completely stopped. I've read that some antidepressants can slow down the movement of your digestive system. Up until last night, from being on antidepressants starting in mid August, I've resumed my normal diet, and started to bulk again for gym.

I know I should probably go to the doctor, but I always get feared up about these kind of things!

Welcome to the forum, Cody!

Have you been tested for celiac disease? You don't say so but the fact that you are posting on a forum for celiac disease makes me think you are suspecting you may have it.

Thanks for the welcome trents! I haven't been tested, but I do suspect that I have something wrong with my digestive system at the minute. With me having a reaction like that last night to just a few beers, I'm starting to think it may be celiac disease.

I also had an episode where I vomited earlier this year and the vomit was completely dry - I've read that having celiac can, and apologies for probably not wording this right, but I've read that it can reduce the amount of moisture in your stomach, making food harder to digest.

I suppose I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the same symptoms before being diagnosed with celiac?

I have not heard this before but we are learning more and more about celiac disease all the time and the variety of ways it affects the body.

Certainly, nausea and stomach pains are common with celiac disease when gluten is ingested. And cold sweat and chills are common with nausea and vomiting. This is my experience. Dry heaves usually come after the liquid content of the stomach has been expelled by vomiting or if the liquid content has already moved on to the intestines and there is not much to throw up but the stomach is still spasming. I would suggest getting a blood antibody test for celiac disease. https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/screening-and-diagnosis/screening/ Most doctors are not knowledgeable about celiac disease so you may have to get a little assertive.

I guess I should ask this obvious question. Do you get these symptoms only when drinking beer or do you also experience them when eating other wheat products such as bread and pasta? If it's only with beer then I would not think celiac disease or gluten sensitivity is the issue.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!
