Traveling To Sacramento

Hi, I'll be traveling to Sacramento in June for a business trip and would like to know some places where I can eat while over there? I'll be staying at the Sacramento Hilton, and I'm not familiar with the area at all, so it would be great to have some suggestions =)

thanks

p.s. I'm still learning how to navigate this site (as well as this condition!), so I'm not really sure where I should be posting this topic...

Am I posting this in the wrong forum? I also posted in the Eating Out in Restaurants area but I haven't received any responses on either side... maybe I'm in the wrong place altogether?

No, you're on the right forum...I live in California, but don't know Sacramento at all either. I have a friend who lives there, but she is not gluten-free so wouldn't be of much help I'm afraid. Hum, I know there are a couple of people who live in that area, but I haven't seen them post much recently...give them a bit of time to find your posts. There was a thread a few months ago about California...I'll see if I can find it and post the link...I seem to remember some people talking about Sacramento, but not sure exactly what was said.

Well, here's the thread I was thinking of, I hope it helps a little. If there are any Whole Foods stores near you, you can always pick up snacky things...they do have a gluten-free bakery with breads, cookies, etc. They also care Lara Bars, Cliff Nectar Bars and Tropical Source chocolate bars. You can also try PF Changs or Outback, which have gluten free menus.

Wish I could be of more help, but I only get up to see my friend once every 5 years or so and each time she has to give me directions, lol.

Hi,

I'm in the Sacramento area. I'm new to this too, so don't eat out much yet, but I'll give you what information I have.

The Hilton is in the Arden area, so there's a Mall right down the street (Arden Faire Mall) on the other side of the freeway.

Whole Foods is also on Arden Way, on the corner of Arden and Eastern. It's about 5 miles from the Hilton. Just keep driving past the mall, and it will be on the left. If you talk to the customer service desk, they may have more information on local celiac-friendly restaurants.

PF Chang's and Outback both have gluten-free menus.

Outback Steakhouse has a location on Howe Ave, which is near your hotel. If you drive past the mall, you'll see Howe Ave just a few lights after that. Take a right and I think it's on the left.

In the Sacramento area, there is a PF Changs in Roseville and one in Downtown Sacramento on J Street.

If you're planning on eating at the hotel at all you also should contact the hotel and talk to the restaurant manager and let him know about your special dietary needs. I would also suggest you talk to the people at your work who are coordinating everything and as if there are any planned company meals, and where they are, so that you can call them. Given enough notice, most restaurants and caterers can easily accomodate you.

Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for the responses =)

I'm actually headed out today, and with your help I've compiled a list of places to check out, thanks!

I've spoken to the executive sous chef at the hotel restaurant, and he told me that the staff and waitstaff are all familiar with gluten intolerance and I just need to let them know when I'm eating in their restaurant. I first told him I have Celiac sprue/celiac disease and he'd never heard of it, so then I said it basically means I'm gluten intolerant and asked if he was familiar with that, and he said yes, they have had several guests with gluten intolerance and are able to work with them =)

I will let you know how it went with the hotel when I return, thanks again for the help.

Good info from Nancy. I live in Chico and drive down to go to Whole Foods every two months. It's easy to find from the Arden area - just keep following Arden until you get to Eastern.

I have gotten decent service at the Black Angus (out off Sunrise - not near Arden though) and gotten a sirloin lunch with steamed veggies two or three times now and not gotten sick. Also, there are a few Trader Joes aroudn the area - one not too far from Arden, it's a Fulton and Marconi.

Hope you have a good time in Sac!

Stephanie

Yes.  I have had the tmj condition for 40 years. My only help was strictly following celiac and also eliminating soy.  Numerous dental visits and several professionally made bite plates  did very little to help with symptoms

Cristiana makes a good point and it's something I've pointed out at different times on the forum. Not all of our ailments as those with celiac disease are necessarily tied to it. Sometimes we need to look outside the celiac box and remember we are mortal humans just like those without celiac disease.

Also suffer badly with gluten and TMJD, cutting out gluten has been a game changer, seems to be micro amounts, much less than 20ppm.  Anyone else have issues with other food stuffs? Soy (tofu) and/or milk maybe causing TMJD flare-ups, any suggestions or ideas? --- I'm beginning to think it maybe crops that are grown or cured with glyphosphate. Oats, wheat, barley, soy, lentils, peas, chickpeas, rice, and buckwheat, almonds, apples, cherries, apricots, grapes, avocados, spinach, and pistachios.

Hi @Scatterbrain Thank you for your reply.   Some of these things could be weaknesses, also triggered by stress, which perhaps have come about as the result of long-term deficiencies which can take a long time to correct.   Some could be completely unrelated. If it is of help, I'll tell you some of the things that started in the first year or two, following my diagnosis - I pinned everything on coeliac disease, but it turns out I wasn't always right!  Dizziness, lightheaded - I was eventually diagnosed with cervical dizziness (worth googling, could be your issue too, also if you have neck pain?)  A few months after diagnosis I put my neck out slightly carrying my seven-year-old above my head, and never assigned any relevance to it as the pain at the time was severe but so short-lived that I'd forgotten the connection. Jaw pain - stress. Tinnitus - I think stress, but perhaps exacerbated by iron/vitamin deficiencies. Painful ribs and sacroiliac joints - no idea, bloating made the pain worse. It got really bad but then got better. Irregular heart rate - could be a coincidence but my sister (not a coeliac) and I both developed this temporarily after our second Astra Zeneca covid jabs.   Subsequent Pfizer jabs didn't affect us. Brain fog - a big thing for people with certain autoimmune issues but in my case I think possibly worse when my iron or B12 are low, but I have no proof of this. Insomnia - stress, menopause. So basically, it isn't always gluten.  It might be worth having your vitamins and mineral levels checked, and if you have deficiencies speak to your Dr about how better to address them?

@NanceK, I do have Hypersensitivity Type Four reaction to Sulfa drugs, a sulfa allergy.  Benfotiamine and other forms of Thiamine do not bother me at all.  There's sulfur in all kinds of Thiamine, yet our bodies must have it as an essential nutrient to make life sustaining enzymes.  The sulfur in thiamine is in a ring which does not trigger sulfa allergy like sulfites in a chain found in pharmaceuticals.  Doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition (nor chemistry in this case).  I studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I wanted to know what vitamins were doing inside the body.   Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Not feeling well after starting Benfotiamine is normal.  It's called the "thiamine paradox" and is equivalent to an engine backfiring if it's not been cranked up for a while.  Mine went away in about three days.  I took a B Complex, magnesium and added molybdenum for a few weeks. It's important to add a B Complex with all eight essential B vitamins. Supplementing just one B vitamin can cause lows in some of the others and result in feeling worse, too.  Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of all the B vitamins, not just thiamine.  You need all eight.  Thiamine forms including Benfotiamine interact with each of the other B vitamins in some way.  It's important to add a magnesium glycinate or chelate supplement as well.  Forms of Thiamine including Benfotiamine need magnesium to make those life sustaining enzymes.  (Don't use magnesium oxide.  It's not absorbed well.  It pulls water into the intestines and is used to relieve constipation.)   Molybdenum is a trace mineral that helps the body utilize forms of Thiamine.   Molybdenum supplements are available over the counter.  It's not unusual to be low in molybdenum if low in thiamine.   I do hope you will add the necessary supplements and try Benfotiamine again.
