Exercise Ball Questions

Hey all! Does anyone know anything about exercise balls? I've got two - one is small 55cm maybe - and says it's for folks under 5'3. The other one is 65 cm maybe - and that is for my height. BUT...when I sit on the bigger one, my legs don't make a 90-degree angle - and aren't they supposed to?

Question: What is the danger of using the wrong-sized ball? Am I better off with too big (I could underinflate), or small.

I have short legs...maybe that is my problem with the 90-degree angle thing.

Thanks. :)

-Sherri

P.S. I'm 5foot9

Hi Sherri,

Exercise balls are great. I am 5'3" and use the 55cm ball at home...I love it! My gym has various sizes, and I find that I don't always use the same size; it depends on the amount of inflation mostly. You have to use what you are comfortable with. I don't see any danger in using one ball or the other; use the one that's most comfortable, yet challenging, for you. Don't go crazy over abiding by "rules" for using the ball like having your legs bent at 90 degree angles; such recommendations are ideal, but it's not that you won't get a good workout if your legs are at 80 or 110 degrees instead. As long as you can feel the muscles you are working, then I'd say just keep at it! Remember, that the main purpose of using exercise balls is to make existing exercises more challenging by adding greater instability, forcing you to control the movement more and engage your core. As long as you feel like this is what's happening, then I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Good luck!

Thanks. I know I like the smaller ball for some things, like doing squats with the ball up against the wall - this keeps my back safe, which is important to me.

I'll try a workout video I have with each ball and see which one seems "right". Thanks for you input.

p.s. Is that you running? I don't run, and am always impressed by those who do. I walk fast, though.

I'm 5'2", but sit on a 65cm ball, and find it to be just about right, when a tad under inflated and I'm wearing my running shoes (which is what I normally wear). I'd go bigger, rather than smaller, but it depends on your back.

Yup, that's me!

I did the NYC Triathlon a few weeks ago and this is a picture my boyfriend took of me nearing the finish. It was so much fun!

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—
