Does anyone know if the ingredient "Vegetable Shortening" is gluten-free???

So, I take it that noone knows the answer to this question or to my question about the duck sauce/hot mustard packets in chinese restaurants???? <_< Since noone knows those answers, does anyone know who I could ask/call that would be able to help us out???? :blink:

I have sworn off eating anything out of fast food "packets" unless it has a brand name that I have checked out. A lot of places have Heinz ketchup in packets and I'll use that because it's gluten-free. But I wouldn't use it if I wasn't familiar with the brand.

As for vegetable shortening as an ingredient in a manufactured item, I think it would depend on the manufacturer. If it's Kraft or one of the other "gluten-free friendly" companies, it would be labeled "from wheat" or such. What is the item that it is in? Maybe it's something someone has already checked out.

So, long story short - - it depends!

I have never heard of a vegetable shortening with gluten. This is not an ingredient I worry about but others might feel differently.

No one can give you a blanket answer on hot mustard/duck sauce. Neither one SHOULD have gluten but the only way to know is find out the manufacturer and call them. No other way to do it.

Vegetable shortening alone should be gluten-free, and as an ingredient in other foods it should be fine, but I agree that you should check anything that you think is questionable.

And I only use the Heinz ketchup packets and the French's Mustard packets. Any others just are not worth getting sick over.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.
