First Glutening In A While

We had our annual fall festival last weekend. This is my first since my dx. I knew I couldn't have a corn dog, funnel cake, or any of the other tasty treats I used to eat but there was a booth that had "taters", where they spiral cut a whole potato and fried it. I asked if they fried anyhting else in the same vat and was told NO. The girl said thet fried tenderloins in "the other vat". So I tried one. After just a few bites I noticed some crumbs. and almost immediately felt ill. The next day I walked past the booth and saw the girl drop a tenderloin into the same vat the taters were fried in the day before. I din't say anything but learned a good lesson.

It makes me so annoyed when that happens. I know when I ask questions like this, I do not always completely believe what is said. When I am in a situation like this, where I am hungry and need something to eat, I ask the questions and take what I think is the safest option.

I don't know why vendors lie to us, and say what they think we want to hear. But we really need to know the truth. It is probably lack of knowledge on their part as to what gluten does to us, or is it just a commercial thing, they want our money.

My neice was a waitress and when she was asked about gluten free food, she would go out the back and relay the message. Some of the chefs weren't very helpful when they told her a little bit won't hurt and how would the customer know.

In having said that, I think things are getting better.

Take care

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. We learned that lesson the hard way at one of those festivals two weeks ago. We bought our daughter popcorn and 30 minutes later she was throwing up!

The fair is coming up here but we won't be eating anything....

when I went to the fair a few weeks ago the only thing I felt safe eating was a giant baked potato with some grated cheese on it. I was too freeked out and suspicious of everything else, I'm learning if I'm hungry enough I'll just eat what I can.

This is an awful thing to have happen - I think that if some of these people (that lie) were faced with a person that had an allergy to peanuts, they wouldn't hesitate to tell the truth and certainly not have ideas about "just a little is okay".

People seem to know about peanut allergies but it seems to me that anything involving gluten (wheat, grains, etc.) is just considered to be too weird to be taken seriously.

We need our own ad-campaign. ;)

Hi,

That's interesting....I thought popcorn from a vendor at a fair, mall, etc. is safe....what do they put on it that contains gluten?

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
