Pain After Taking Acid Reflux Meds?

When I was in the process of getting diagnosed... my GI gave me Nexium and then we tried Protonix. I was just wondering if anyone else suffered severe abdominal pain when taking those. And, if so, what could that mean? Just curious. I look forward to some input!

Have you checked to make sure they are gluten-free on www.glutenfreedrugs.com

Don't make the mistake I made. I thought anything my GI prescribed for me would be okay since it was coming from him, but my GI prescribed Lomotil for the diarrhea and sure enough, after a major reaction, I checked on the list and it contained gluten!!!

Have a great day!

Karen,

Thank you so much for your suggestions. When you mentioned that Lomotil isn't gluten-free I discontinued it and when you mentioned it here again, I thought I'd better check the Prilosec OTC that I take-OPPS! It's not on the list either! Thanks again, Granny

i used to take nexium before my diagnosis to control reflux, it is gluten free however I experienced severe stomach pain almost as though someone punched me in the stomach and i also felt very full with even the smallest amount of food when I was taking it. However, after about 4-6 months those side effects went away....Good luck hope you feel better!

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
