Gp Is Going To Give A Positive Diagnosis At Last

Hi everybody... went to my GP today as my husband was in bed with severe back and joint pain and I had to collect valium for him. He is waiting to be referred to a GI for look in his intestine because of all of his gastro symptoms and because our son is almost definitley celiac even though his bloods were negative. We are hoping for a positive biopsy in hubbie, not only as it will explain all of his own problems but also our sons... not that we feel we need the positive result with our son because we have started him on the gluten-free diet and are seeing amazing results... but we want the positive result in order to feel justified going to hubbies family and suggesting that they be tested also as most of them display symptoms of celiac disease. Anyway.... was at the GP and he brought up my hubbies possible celiac condition and is in complete agreement that we are on the right track despite the fact that his bloods were also negative. He said that all his back and joint pain might also be attributed to the condition and that there was a chance that on the gluten-free diet, they might disappear!!! Hubbie is eating lots of gluten at moment because of upcoming biopsy and this week he got ill and got back spasm etc... it all makes so much sense... he also said that if we needed it, he will give a positive diagnosis of celiac disease despite the lack of blood work to back up his claim. He said he will do it based on his own viewings of our son over the years, based on my husbands obvious symptoms and also on sons overwhelming response to the diet... not only does this diagnosis make me feel a lot betterl, it also means we might be able to financially claim money back from the government on the expense of the diet... fingers crossed!!

Anyway, I just wanted to share my delight in discovering that even after visits to specialists and pediatricians etc who were of the opinion that they dont have celiac because blood work was negative, the good old GP is on our side!!!! Yippee!!!

All is not lost!!

hope everyone is well...

This is good news. It is great some doctors are finally waking up. Don't count on the tax credit too much though as it is counted as a medical expense and you may find that without prescriptions and tests and doctors visits you don't spend enough to qualify for it. It also involves an awful lot of calculation, and you may find you don't use as much celiac specific foods as you thought you would need. I hope everyone feels better soon, and you have found a great place for info and support.

Thank you. I will look into the money back issue... I have heard of a scheme here in ireland that might involve recouping people of such expenses but dont know anything about it yet. still, i am so pleased with the positive diagnosis that I could do a jig. finally someone listening to us and believing us despite the lack of blood work... hubbie is feeling better today but he is depressed by it all. I do hope that when his biopsy is over that he will see good results from his diet... fingers crossed anyway...

this is a wonderful board... such support!!!

Hi Liz, I'm in England.

Can you not get prescription (from your GP) gluten-free foods in Ireland ?

So far 3 months in - worsening symptoms. I have had the worst constipation in my life and I am primarily eating naturally gluten-free foods like potatoes, eggs, salad with homemade dressing, corn tortillas, etc. I hate gluten-free bread and pasta so I don't eat it. Occasionally I eat gluten-free almond flour crackers. As stated in the post, I don't have any vitamin deficiency. I was already tested.

Talk to your  Talk to your provider about testing for vitamin and mineral deficiency.  celiac disease causes malabsorption and eventually malnutrition.  Especially vitamin D. Having the gallbladder removed seems to be a common step on the way to a Celiac Disease Diagnosis,  Gallbladder is a sympton of deficient Choline. Eggs and red meat are the primary source..Choline makes up a majority of the bile salts.  The bile gets thick, doesn't get enough into intestine to digest fats well.  Can eventually back up into gallbladder, cause gallstones.  Without bile, bowel movements can become hard. Try to avoid all processed foods while you are healing, The gluten-free foods are not fortified with vitamins and use various ingredients to mimic fat that bothers many Celiacs.  Choose vegatables with low omega 6.  Optimum omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is less than 3:1.  Wheat flour is 22:1.  Grass fed milk is 1:1.   Commercial Dairies milk is 5:1.  They feed wheat, rye and barley Gluten as part of the food mix.

Your DGP-G is also high. The thing to do now would be to trial the gluten-free diet for a few months to see if there is improvement in symptoms.
