Where Do I Turn?

at my wits end

Recommended Posts

at my wits end Newbie

Greeting everyone! First time poster here and am at my wits end. I have a happy 18 month old girl that has had chronic diarreha for 3 months. We have eliminated all dairy, sugar, etc. Doctor has tested the stool for a "bunch" of tests, but everything comes back negative. He is now sending us to a specialists, but I am just not sure if that is the right thing to do.

A little history. We have a 7 year old boy that went through all kinds of tests as an infant due to excessive vomiting and constipation only to put him through test after test and nothing. He just grew out of it at 2 years.

Our little girl also had reflux as in infant, spitting up constantly but that ended quickly at 6 months. She is healthy and happy and loves to eat. We have been limiting her liquids and trying to feed her very bland foods. This is making her quite cranky, but overall she seems fine.

Her diarreha is explosive at times (up the front and back), is very foul smelling and at times looks to be greasy and today it looked as if it had a "gel" in it.

Any thoughts? Am I in the right place?

Are there any digestive issues in your family or your husbands. Celiac is genetic.

With that question for you, I will defer to the other mothers with children with celiac.

Hang in there until morning, the calvary will show up.

Thank you for the reply Momma Goose. No, I am not aware of any particular digestive issues in our families. My mother did have colitis in the last 70's, but other than that, I am not aware.

I am open to ideas. Thanks again!

it's possible that it could be related to Celiac or a gluten intolerance problem. It certainly sounds like you could be describing my daughter's diapers when she was an infant. It could be something else too (what, I don't know... I'm inclined to believe a lot of these kinds of issues are dietary related).

You can either choose to go through a pediatric gastroenterologist and have BOTH of your children screened for Celiac (Keeping in mind the tests can only confirm it, they cannot rule it out ever). OR you can simply try the gluten free diet with your children and see if it makes a difference.

My daughters blood tests for Celiac were negative, but as soon as we put her on the gluten-free diet she started to improve miraculously. I certainly remember the explosive diarrhea and the horrible up the back messes... ugh... I feel for you.

Welcome to the forum, @rjane! Making gluten free bread from scratch that both tastes good and holds together is a real challenge. There are some pretty good commercially made choices in the stores these days. Once the big food companies figured out there were enough of us out there for them to generate a profit, they went to work developing some good recipes that are hard to emulate at home. However, the commercially made breads are expensive! One thing to to realize is that gluten free flours often contain ingredients that are hard to digest (polysaccharides) and can cause gas, bloating and the runs. Things like xanthan gum and gar gum that are used as texturing agents. The...

Welcome to the forum, @mytype1diabetes, Your statement that your daughter has become itchy and has hair loss made me think of iron deficiency.  Those were the same symptoms i had when I was iron deficient.  Was she tested for iron deficiency anemia at the time of her diabetes diagnosis?   Seems in the early stages of iron deficiency anemia, blood glucose levels can be falsely elevated.  Treating Vitamin D deficiency can also help immensely.  Vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency, and deficiencies in the eight B vitamins, especially thiamine, can occur in Celiac disease.  Changes in stool can be caused by iron or thiamine deficiency. I was diagnosed with type two diabetes and had the...

So sorry and sending well wishes. Replying from the UK. The NHS Coeliac Screen test is igAttg (including total igA). Your toddler is unlikely igA deficient with a titer of 22, as a positive test. When the igA anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies are raised above the reference value or positive, the endomysial test is performed. The TTG test is suggestive of coeliac disease BUT it can be transiently raised in type 1 diabetes, milk protein intolerance (common in early childhood. Can also cause malabsorption similar to coeliac disease). Can be slightly raised in other food sensitivity and food allergy and some other conditions. Whilst it is more specific for coeliac disease than the older...
