In researching celiac disease, I came across several websites touting the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) as being superior for celiacs, seeming because it cuts out all processed, starchy foods -- supposedly the gut heals better when doing this. Has anyone actually tried this? If so, what were your results? I'm very interested in opinions and experiences.

There are several people on here who have tried it. I am on a modified one, actually more the Paleolithic diet (the way we ate as hunter-gatherers for millions of years) which goes a step beyond SCD, but I'm eating some rice. I don't use dairy and homemade yogurt is a big component of Elaine Gottschall's diet. Her book describing the diet is called "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" and is available in paperback. I will say that for me, as I seem to react to a LOT of foods or just eating in general, the Paleo diet has helped me. It has only been two months, however, and I'm still having ups and downs. Hopefully others will post regarding the SCD. I would say if you are symptomatic still it is worth a try. In her book she says to try it and be strict for one month; you will know then if you feel better and if so to continue for the full year. (her recommendation) After a year I believe she says you can begin putting foods back in. Good luck to you!

I, too, am on the Paelo diet. I have collagenous colitis, not celiac, but collagenous colitis is also triggered by gluten (among other things). I started by going gluten free which helped some, but still had frequent D. I then tried the specific carb diet, but finally realized that dairy was causing problems. I finally cut out dairy too and things are more or less under control, just one imodium in the morning. The specific carb diet is worthwhile trying if gluten free doesn't work. There's several threads here from about 8 months ago.

Um, I never tried the specific carbohydrate diet, I just went crazy with protein and healthy fats at one point and felt way better. You know, all organic produce, organic beef and chicken (and lots of it!) Lots of avocado and coconut oil, eggs and raw olive oil, lots of raw milk and yogurt. I have to admit I healed faster than a lot of people, with less effects as time went by when I get glutened. I was only 'sick' for less than six months before I figured mine out, a lot of people have been sick for years and years, so it takes a lot longer to heal. I do know that most bodies function better without any processed grains or sugars, including white rice and corn and potatos. i would only add a little of these back in as you heal, there's a lot about grains on Mercola's website, he's one of the current 'health gurus', if you will. I think a lot of what he says makes sense. Hope this helps, sorry I don't know that particular diet.

Yea, we already do this. We began about a year ago getting rid of all processed foods, and we rely on raw milk, cheeses, etc. My childrens' allergy symptoms pretty much disappear when we are eating well, but return with a vengeance when they deviate from whole foods for more than a meal. Yes, it's that dramatic.

We are already pretty gluten-free (me 100%), but I am noticing that I tend to react to all grain-based carbs (corn, buckwheat, oats, rice, etc) just like they contain gluten. The main doctor who has promoted SCD addresses this in some articles. She says that there is some underlying damage that is causing me to do this -- which makes sense. I have read Mercola's opinions, and I'm thinking we're going to try the specific carb diet. I really want healing, and hope this will help.

Are there any celiacs out there who have tried this??? I'll look for some other posts.

It's the Paleolithic diet- the way we ate for millions of years. No grains at all! No dairy, nothing that needs cooking in order to eat it. Hence, potatos which have a toxin in them and beans which need cooking are out. Most legumes are out. What we killed with sticks (meat, fish, chicken...) and picked off trees and ate from the ground- most veggies, most fruits allowed. Seeds, nuts are okay except for cashews which need to be cooked to get rid of a toxin. No sugars although I think honey is allowed. Grains were only introduced to the human diet about 10,000ish? years ago, therefore most of us are not yet adroit at digesting them as evolution has not yet caught up with this innovation. (Many researchers agree that no one digests the gluten molecule well- it is very large) And we didn't have dairy food then either.

      @Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed.       Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

      Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

      I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
