Hi All,

Just thought you'd like to know I went to my dentist Monday for a regular 6 month cleaning. The dental hygienist asked if anything had changed in my medical history. I said, not officially. I had been doing an elimination diet and wheat seems to be causing some issue. She immediately asked "Celiac?"

I said no, I think it is an actual wheat allergy but I go to by GP Weds (today!) and will discuss more with her then.

Anyway, I barely got out the "trouble with wheat" and she was all over Celiac. Thought that was great! :)

That's really good! It's funny, last time I went to the dentist (about 3 weeks ago) the hygienist asked the same thing, and I said, yes, Celiac Disease. And she said, "really? me too!" So we spent a lot of time discussing the disease, diagnosis, foods, shopping. Best time I've ever had at the dentist!

At our dentist, you need to specify 'Celiac Disease' before your actual appointment so that they can make sure and have gluten-free toothpaste to clean with. The one variety they were planning on using when I went was NOT gluten-free...

Right. And this is good. I had already called the dentist's office prior to my appointment. But I think she was asking as she was reading my chart and hadn't noticed that yet. I think it should be on the outside of the file and big and bold somehow like they do with your allergies.

I sat there and made them do that (mark the chart in bold) in front of me for my daughter's chart (I'm not celiac, but she is), but they still told me to call a week in advance to make sure they had the gluten-free cleaner in stock.

I had actually thought about the toothpaste...after...my appt (I really need to improve my timing). However, once a year - and this was that appt - I get them to "sandblast" instead of polish. It is a high pressure wash with baking soda. Not great on the tongue and it is very messy but boy the teeth feel and look much better!

      Gluten tester

      I saw the thing for testing for gluten when at public places.I absolutely love but I wonder if they would come up with a bracelet or necklace that can detect gluten in the air.I would LOVE that, i know i get debilitating migraine from smelling gluten wheat what have you, all I know is when I go into places like Chevron- gluten Subway, migraine, Costco that...

      Thank you so much for your help, @trents and @Staticgypsy! I so appreciate your thoughts. My diet is high in foods with oxalates and I don’t notice any issues there. If eliminating gluten from my diet had changed anything I’d be happy to just keep on the gluten-free diet, but with eating gluten several times with no rash, and having a rash when I was man...

      I saw the thing for testing for gluten when at public places.I absolutely love but I wonder if they would come up with a bracelet or necklace that can detect gluten in the air.I would LOVE that, i know i get debilitating migraine from smelling gluten wheat what have you, all I know is when I go into places like Chevron- gluten Subway, migraine, Costco that food smell of nasty gluten- migraine and same with Walmart subway.I absolutely HATE im that sensitive, my body reacts.Sadly medical hasn't taken core issue of celiac being an issue considering glutenfree ever since 1994 and in their eyes not because they didn't diagnose me. I am and wish I wasn't. If there was a detector of gluten in the air it would make a world of difference.

      Thank you so much for your help, @trents and @Staticgypsy! I so appreciate your thoughts. My diet is high in foods with oxalates and I don’t notice any issues there. If eliminating gluten from my diet had changed anything I’d be happy to just keep on the gluten-free diet, but with eating gluten several times with no rash, and having a rash when I was many years into gluten-free eating (and was much more careful at that point), I’m just baffled. Many, many thanks to you both.
