Not Sure What Is Going On! Ugh!

My DD has bee gluten-free going into the 3rd(maybe 4th week) she has been amazing about everything. We have been very careful at least we think we have been. Last week she had a bad headache so I gave her the Walmart brand (equate) meltaway pain med. Then the next day she had a tummy ache. I thought it was something she eat until Wed night she had another head ache so DH gave her the same medicine. Sure enough the next morning she was doubled over in pain. It looked to be gluten-free I even called the company and they said it was even though I have my doubts after telking to them. So I figured it was the meds and am not giving her those again.

Now this morning she is doubled over in pain again! I know everything she eat is gluten-free becuse I checked and she hasn't had a reaction to the stuff before.

The only thing I could think of is it is the milk she drank because I have slaked on giving her the lactaid pills because she swore milk wasn't up[setting her tummy. Silly mommy thought a 7 yr old would know her own body enough. I feel awful now!

She also has chronic gastritis could that be bothering her and not the celiac? Should I get something over the counter for that and see if it helps? Like pepdo?

I am not sure what to do.

I'm not sure I would do anything at this point until you've tried using the lactaid regularly again. If that doesn't work, I would start on a food journal immediately to see if you can track any foods that may be bothering her. It may be another food intolerance or it may just be that gluten is sneaking in somewhere. Its really hard to tell without a food diary.

Do you have a supportive, knowledgeable pediatrician? If so, if the lactaid doesn't work, I think I would consult him/her before giving her any other medications. They could just mask the problem rather than solving it.

Thanks for the reply,

A food diary is a great idea. thing is she eats almost the same thing every dayLOL Panda puffs or gluten-free waffles then roated chicken with mustard for lunch then gluten-free pasta or yogurt for dinner LOL So her diary is simple! LOL

I have a call into her ped now hopefully I will get a call back this am. I just feel bad because she doesn't want to go to her soccer game this afternoon 'incase'her tummy hurts. I told her she has some time to decide so we will see.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
