Well my son, age 4, has a long battle with constipation and being impacted. ALL other remidies have failed us over the past 3 + years. Our GI contantly has us do a clean out by having him drink large amounts of magnsium citrate...but he refuses to even drink a sip anymore. So we are now, Monday morning going to be admitted to the hospital for the GI to do a clean out. She said she will put him to sleep. We've never done this and she didn't explain it does anyone know what I can expect???

I think I know what it is from a horrible thing he had done over 2 yrs ago with a reg ped who was horrible and I don't want him to go through that again......they put a tube down his nose in his tummy pumped him full of meds and did a million enamas...he had dihariia and vomiting ..it continued on for 6 hours. He was awake the entire time and it didn't remove the blockage...this was a horrible Kaiser doctor and I reported her....it should have been done in a hospital w/specialist.....

I hope that is not what he will endure on Monday.

Your poor little guy!

This suggestion may be way out there but I'm wondering if deep tissue massage by someone who is well trained might help. Before I knew I had celiac disease I went to get a shiatsu massage and when he was working on me he asked me if I had any intestinal problems. I thought it was an unusual question but obviously his trained hands could feel something when he was working in my lower back region. I had BM's everyday but looked obviously pregnant from constipation. Well, the next day my system cleaned itself out completely. I was shocked. My tummy went back to being flat! I hadn't seen it normal in a LONG time! Sometimes I massage that same area on either side of the lower back, just above the hips and I squeeze and release my tummy, sucking it it and letting it out. It helps.

Anyway, I hope you find something that works.

For something like that, call the Doctor BEFORE the procedure day. Have the entire procedure explained to you. Step -by step and in plain English. Have them go over it and write it down until you are comfortable with what is going on.

They should have expalined this to you. When you have any type of procedure done especially to a child, you need to ask tons of questions. How long is the procedure? How long will he be under? What will be required for recovery? What needs to be done to ensure this doesn't happen again? Any risks? Are they scoping him too? Are they looking for any blockages or internal issues while they have him out? Its a perfect time for the scope, IMO.

Hope he feels better.

I agree, you'll need to be well prepared so that you can be a support for your son as well as an advocate, if they are contemplating something that seems inappropriate.

What a tough thing for this cute little guy.

Ok so here is what happened and they did explain in to me once we got there but I was unsure exactally what. The only reason they put him to sleep was to place the angeotube (tube that goes in your nose down your esophogus and to your tummy). This tube was hooked upto a med called go litely. He also got an IV for fluids too. They kept him for a day and a half at the hospital for close monitoring. They slowly admistered the meds and it flushed him out (poop out and vomit too)....we got an xray to make sure it was all gone.

Actually the doc said she couldn't scope because he needed to get rid of poop first. Next week we are scheduled for a rectal biopsy.

THAT IS RIDUCLOUS.. FORCING HIM TO DRINK THAT STUFF.. WHERE ARE YOU?? WHAT STATE? AND AWAKE?? THAT IS NASTY.. I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR GI IS TOUCHED.. TELL HER TO DRINK ALL THAT STUFF HERSELF.. SORRY I HAD TO SAY IT..

DID YOU TRY GLYCOLAX? IT IS A POWDER THAT YOU PUT INTO DRINK EVERY DAY. A MEASURED DOSE... MY DAUGHTER HAS ALWAYS BEEN CRONICALLY CONSTIPATED.. IT IS GETTING BETTER WITH THE DIET.. BUT, STILL NEEDS IT.. BUT, SLOWLY AND SURELY THE AMOUNT USED IS GETTING LOWER, WE ARE NOW DOWN TO 1 TEA SPOON A DAY.. THATS IT AND SHE GOES ALMOST EVERYDAY..

YOU CAN BUY IT OVER THE COUNTER OR THE PEDS CAN WRITE A SCRIPT AND IT SHOULD BE COVERED.. JUST START WITH A VERY SMALL AMOUNT AND SEE WHAT THE RESULT IS.. I'M NOT A DR. THIS IS WHAT I HAD TO DO..THIS IS THE FIRST THING THAT EVER WORKED CONSISTENTLY FOR HER.. AND IT IS gluten-free..

IS THERE ANY FOOD ALLERGIES? IS THERE A SPECIFIC FOOD THAT IS EATEN ALLOT? THAT COULD BE THE ROOT OF THE CONSTIPATION.. IS THERE IRON IN THE VITAMINS.. IRON WILL CAUSE CONSTIPATION.. I WOULD SUGGEST A FOOD DIARY.. SEE WHAT HAPPENS

Are you going to a GI? My daughter has gone to the her gi for endoscopies. they used propofol. it knocks them out in like 35 seconds.. there is no after affect..

**********MAKE SURE HE EATS OR DRINKS NOTHING.. OR NO MATTER WHAT THEY GIVE HIM HE WILL VOMIT WHEN HE WAKES UP.

VVVVVV GOOD LUCK ON MONDAY AND LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES.. LYNN

@catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten. This explains it well: Lectins, agglutinins, and their roles in autoimmune reactivities https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25599185/

I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.
    • catnapt
I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks
