Swelling And Hives

Has anyone ever gotten swelling, hives, and bright red cheeks as a reaction to gluten? We are a gluten-free household, but I accidentally bought one jar of gluten containing baby food for my nine month old. I still don't know how that happened! Anyway, she broke out in hives, her face swelled up, and her cheeks are BRIGHT red. My older daughter and I never had those reactions to gluten! I am not sure if she had a reaction or if she is maybe sick...There is nothing else new she has been exposed to. She is also irritable and screamed at me when I touched her belly. She is normally a pleasant child....

Still can't believe I ended up with gluten baby food! Help!

I've gotten swelling and hives from gluten before. The bright red cheeks could also mean an allergic reaction (as can the hives and swelling). Watch her carefully, if she seems to develop other problems, like not being able to breathe, take her to the ER immediately!

You poor thing! I read your list of ailments! And I complain about GLUTEN INTOLERANCE!!! Forgive my ignorance, but what do you eat?

Well, for the most part I just eat meat, some vegetables, the occasional banana (if I eat them too often I get oral allergy syndrome), peeled pears, peeled golden delicious apples, salads, nuts, fish. Sometimes I bake with buckwheat flour, and if I feel like it I eat cream of buckwheat for breakfast (I am not a cereal person, plus I can't eat too many starches).

How is your little one, any better?

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
