Bumps (papular Urticaria)...are They Related?

I originally found out I had issues with wheat last Spring due to a skin test. Was never able to take the test for celiac due to being gluten-free. I do know that my symptoms included headaches, abdominal pains, eczema, mouth ulcers and depression.

Las week, I started breaking out with little bumps in various places on my body. Some where painful. They were biopsied and the derma said it was papular Urticaria-- the nurse said it was possibly due to a bug bite.

Knowing my history with wheat-- not to mention the fact that it is cold and rainy and we haven't been outdoors for awhile-- made me start to Google.

Sure enough...I found sites that said this can be caused by a food allergy.

Except..I'm gluten free. I have also been having troubles with recurring eczema patches (arms, neck and even my eyelids) while being gluten-free.

Could both of these combined be an indicator that I've managed to get yet another allergy??? Anyone experience these urticarias?

I had them on my upper arms for ages - since I was a kid until a couple years ago. Never really bothered me except for itching a bit now and then and looking annoying. Turned out, as soon as I got them a bit more exposure to the sun (moderate, not sunburns or even really much in the way of tanning), they went away.

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
