Weight Gain

I am being tested for Celiac...I believe I may have it based on the symtoms listed on various web pages...I have almost all the gastro symptoms, mouth and tongue sores, itching, depression, menstral problems, tinkling in hands and feet and many more I can't think of right now...

My only difference in the symptoms is that I have not lost weight, I am gaining...Due to my stomach swelling...I look to be about 8 months pregnant and people have asked me when my baby is due...This also happened last year and lasted for about 6 months, then just as suddenly as the weight came on, it dropped off...Then suddenly on Dec. 22nd (this past Dec.), I litteraly could feel my jeans getting tighter around my waste...This is not easy for me as I lost 130 lbs. about 5 years ago and couldn't even tolerate me gaining a pound...

Just wondering if anyone else has had that problem and was still diagnosed with Celiac? I am almost at my witts end...

Could someone PLEASE help me!!

Weight loss is a classic symptom, however, it has been shown that many people actually gain weight with Celiac disease. Toxins and gas in your body begin to collect along with swelling due to the gluten irritating your system. Have you been on the gluten-free diet for very long? After 2 months of the gluten-free diet, my distended stomach went down and the myriad of other ailments began to subside. However, the healing time-line is different for everyone :)

I have not started the gluten free diet YET...The doctor told me to wait until all the tests have been completed...Even if it comes back negative, I'm still going gluten free---because I really feel gluten has something to do with my problems, based on everything I have read...

Thanks so much for your response!!!

Your symptoms should calm down once you go on the diet for an extended period of time. Just be diligent and don't cheat! ;) You may want to search the posts for advice on getting started on the diet - there is a bit of prep work. They diet may seem daunting at first but, don't get discouraged. It will seem like second nature before you know it - and you'll feel so much better too! ;)

Sorry, to hear that-people shouldn't ask if your pregnant. Unless you're sure-and even then-people shouldn't be so nosy-how rude!

I went gluten-free without the diagnosis and at about 2 months my distended tummy went down. You also may see some other changes as well. I think my body was just accumulating gluten in the weirdest places. My arms look more defined then my pre-gluten-free days. My skin, hair and fingernails look healthier. I'm sure gluten effects a lot of parts of us but, since your tummy is the most noticeable, you will be happy when you do, if you think that is the trouble.

Be sure to get blood work done to check your vitamin & mineral levels...

Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

I'm sure it's chemically perfect. Most of them taste lousy!

Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !

I'm so sorry you're going through this—the "gluten challenge" is notoriously brutal, and it's awful to deliberately make yourself sick when you've already found the answer. For the joint pain, many people find that over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can help take the edge off, and using heating pads or warm baths can provide some direct relief for the aches. For the digestive misery, stick to simple, easy-to-digest foods (like plain rice, bananas, and bone broth) and drink plenty of water and electrolytes to stay hydrated. It feels like the longest month ever, but you are doing the right thing to get a clear diagnosis, which can be crucial for your long-term health and getting the proper care. Hang in there; you can get through this! This article, and the comments below it, may be helpful:

Daura Damm (a sponsor here) uses AN-PEP enzymes and filtering in their brewing process to reduce/remove gluten, and it actually tests below 10ppm (I've see a document where they claim 5ppm).
