Warning - Freak Gluten Contamination In Store.

You won't believe what happened in this store yesterday.

I was selecting various flours in their gluten-free section and noticed a bag of Bob's Red Mill VITAL WHEAT GLUTEN! :o It was located directly in front of the Xan. gum packages.

At first I thought someone had stocked it in the wrong place, it was a BRM brand. (But, apparently, some other customer had placed it on the shelf there.) I pointed it out to a passing clerk, who picked it up to remove it.

Then the unthinkable happened. There was a slit in the celophane bag and when he grabbed ahold of it, POOF - out came a cloud of the product.

Then he moved his hand and bumped the package on the shelf edge, and POOF - out came a larger cloud of POWDERED GLUTEN! It dusted the shelf and got in the air.

Most of the packaged flours now have a dusting of gluten on them.

And, it glutened me - I had breathed in enough of the dust apparently (fortunately, the longer I'm gluten free the less severe my reaction is, and it was very mild indeed today.)

I called the store manager today and had a very good conversation with him. I told him how important it was for them to do some cleanup - wipe the packages with a damp rag and clean the shelves good. He seemed to understand.... but, one never knows.

I told him I wouldn't be buying any gluten-free product from the shelf there for a while because of the contamination, and that if any Celiac person knew of this, they wouldn't touch the products with a ten-foot-pole.

Anyway, I wanted to warn those on this board who shop at this store.

How freaky is this!

Please note (if you didn't read all of the above) it was NOT the fault of the store or its employees. I'm sure a customer put the package down there when they discovered the slit in the celophane - and they placed it with other BRM products. (Sort of logical.)

I'm glad you weren't the one to move the package! I'm glad that you feel ok.

I wasn't going to touch that package just on the principle of the thing. Yes, I am VERY GLAD. Good grief, it would have been all over me.

Yikes! Thanks for the warning! I hope they are conscientious about cleaning it all up.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.
