What Can I Make With Steel Cut Oats?

I just bought a bag of Bob's Red Mill gluten-free steel cut oats. I have never had them before (I've only baked/cooked with rolled oats). What can I make with them other than basic hot cereal? Can they be used for cookies?

Thanks,

Marcia

I just got some as a sample. I use the rolled oats in baking, but steel cut will react differently I think. My guess is that they won't absorb moisture as well and may not soften up as easily. You may be able to add cooked steel cut oats to things. I used to add a cooked mulitgrain cereal to pancakes, just followed the regular recipe and folded in maybe a 1/4 c. of the thick cooked cereal. You don't want to add cereal that is too wet. I see alot of muffin recipes that call for a cooked cereal. Bob's has one on the bag of Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and it may be on their website as well.

I don't think they would work well in cookies. I think they would stay too hard. Open Original Shared Linkfrom the Bob's Red Mill website to give you other ideas on how to use them.

Can you grind them a bit in the blender then you could use them for flour or such.

Also you can presoak any grain in buttermilk and use it for bread. SIGH I could have told you how to do this before I went gluten free, I have no idea how to do it this way. LOL

I would have said soak some in buttermilk then add some fat, sugar, salt, yeast and some flour. <_< So I guess I'm not much help!

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
