Hi Everyone,

I'm fairly new here; my daughter was recently diagnosed with celiac. So I/we are learning a lot. My question is about meat(s). This morning I went to my favorite store, Wal-mart, for groceries, incl. meat. My understanding is that natural flavoring is on the list of forbidden items. Can my daughter have meats with n.f. in them or not? Today I bought the following: please tell me what you think. 1.) Honeysuckle white 'all natural' ground turkey-- ingred. turkey & natural flavoring; 2.) Steak House brand top sirloin steak-- ingred. incl. natural flavoring & beef broth; 3.) Steak House brand round steak--ingred. incl. natural flavoring & beef broth; & 4.) Pilgrim's Pride '100 % Natural' fresh young whole chicken, enhanced with up to 12% chicken broth.

Any help on these items is appreciated as well as on other meats from my favorite store.

Thanks & have a blessed day.

I dont think I've used any of those (except maybe the turkey). I know many people on this list and other food allergy lists simply call the company and ask. However, many companies dont actually KNOW what is in their 'natural flavoring'.

Ok, i just went and looked in my email folder i keep for company responses, and guess what I found -- an email response about the frozen Honeysuckle White turkey. i had already found it to be gluten-free (i dont remember if that was actually on the label, or if i found that on their website). But i emailed them to ask about other food issues of mine, and this was the response:

Our fresh and frozen turkeys are injected with a basting solution that contains turkey broth (turkey juice and water), salt, sodium phosphate, sugar and a natural flavoring that is an allergen free, non-dairy butter flavoring.

Our All Natural-Antibiotic Free and Vegetarian Fed whole turkey contains no additives, artificial ingredients or preservatives.

Our fresh and frozen bone in turkey breasts are injected with a basting solution that contains turkey broth (turkey juice and water), salt, sodium phosphate, sugar and a natural flavoring of capsicum (pepper).

All of these products are free of the "Big 8" allergens (dairy, egg, soy, fish, shellfish, nut, peanuts/tree nuts, gluten and casein), as well as being free of sesame and MSG .

YOu might want to check on the web for the other products tho.

Get your total IGA checked to make sure your celiac antibody test scores are trustworthy.

I do eat 4 slices of wheat bread with almond butter. Yes it was a reference to my iron consumption.

To give you a frame of reference for pretesting gluten consumption necessary to ensure valid antibody testing, here is the current recommendation for those who have been on a gluten free diet: The daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for at least two weeks. Not sure why you mentioned eggs and chicken. They are not sources of gluten. Was that in reference to dietary iron consumption?

Thanks for your insight. I've been eating wheat bread at least 5 times a week for several months. I've been eating chicken or eggs 5 days a week for at least a year.
