I started my life style change when i woke up this morning......i recently found out i am allergic to:yeast/MSG, tomatoes, milk, gluten(i realize not so much an allergy), and fake sugar. i'm a vegetarian.

i also have a fungus infection in my sinuses.

anyone else a teen trying to deal with this? What do you do to help that hungry feeling?

wow, that must be very hard to deal with. i recently just got diagnosed with celiac and i'm lactose intolerant. it's pretty hard when i go somewhere, or when i'm hungry. all i really eat is fruit ahha. i'm a vegetarian too, but have recently started eating chicken again because there is like nothing i can eat. just eat a lot of salads, thats what i do haha

That's tremendously hard to deal with. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and a low IgA deficiency as an infant, so for my whole life, I've avoided eating food with gluten, wheat, yeast, dairy, & eggs. I'm also allergic to tomatoes, bananas, and chocolate.

Just out of curiosity, I've cheated; when I cheated for long enough, I would pay the consequences. Like you, I had fungal infections accompanied by a lot of sinus problems. When I was younger and accidentally ate something I couldn't, I would just get really cranky, tired, and suffer from all sorts of GI problems; when I was teenager and I did it (I'm almost 21 now), the biggest side effects were fatigue, constant headaches and runny/stuffy noses. I constantly had problems with candida, a form of a yeast infection that can grow in mucous membrane regions of the body.

I can't imagine eating food I've loved all of my life and then having someone to tell me to stop eating it at around the age we are now. However, you will adjust to the gluten-free diet, and things will get better -- I promise. Keep your head high, be a smart eater and know your limits and what to avoid. I suggest even that when you go out, you always carry a couple of snacks with you. For instance, if you're hanging out with your friends and they all order pizza, you don't want to be the one who sits there drooling and watching them (because that's happened to me plenty of times!) -- just take your own snack out and eat it, When I go out to eat with family or friends, I find that most restaurants are VERY accommodating when I tell them I have a wheat - and gluten - allergy. Times have definitely changed for the better for those suffering from Celiac Disease.

yes, the HUNGRY feeling. It is not hunger, at least not for me, I find it to be a numb burn, for me it's a combination of bloatedness and constipation, and i ultimately crave food to help move the blockage. it does not really help. it takes about 7 days from eating gluten for it to start fading away.

I get that hungry feeling a lot and I think it has to do with not getting enough fat in your diet, I eat lots of veggies and find if I roast or fry them in oil it keeps me full much longer.

Also other things I've added to my diet that help are sweet potatoes, buckwheat and quinoa

And if you can have eggs, hard boiled eggs can really help a salad be a lot more filling

QUINOA IS AMAZING!

I prefer it for gluten-free noodles over anything and everything else.

Quinoa is ALOT better than rice noodles.

Potatoe noodles are pretty good too.

Well I'm Briana, I'm 15 and from Southern California.

I started my gluten and dairy free diet last December. I too are a vegetarian.

Citris acid, sugar, and any carbonation, my stomach does not work well with at all.

You eventually learn to get use to it.

Tomatoes, I gotta say are my weakness. I LOVE THEM, and not eating them is tough, no matter how much it hurts.

I always get stumped when people ask me what I eat.

Umm... I guess I can say I eat alot of potatoes. French fries, hashbrowns, OreIda potaoes, those frozen bagged ones are pretty much what I live off of, most of their stuff is gluten free.

Bush's vegetarian baked beans are also something I eat alot of.

It's hard with the vegetarian thing cause most of the meat substitutes ((Veggie burgers, bacon, etc.)) contains wheat, so I pretty much just gave up on that. Tofu, I don't know what you think about that, I've made tofu sandwhiches before, with rice bread, mayonaise, and letuce. I just have to toast the bread first. Those I thought were really good.

Have you tried Amys? She makes very good frozen meals. Pizza, enchalades, and other good stuff, so you should give that a try.

I'm on prevacid, I don't know if you are actually allergic to tomatoes or just can't eat them, but prevacid is kinda helping me, so maybe you can see if you can take that.

There are some cereals I know you can eat that are normal. Trix, Fruity Pebbles, and Rice Chex. If your a cereal eater.

I don't know where you live but here in Southern California we have this gourmet burrito place called Chipolte, it's my favorite! You can have everything there except the flour tortilla, and hot salsa. And in my case, and I think yours, all salsa is out, and so is the cheese, sour cream and all meat. I get the vegetarian burrito bowl, its DELICIOUS! So if you don't have one of those near you, if you ever come visit Southern California, I don't know why you would, but you should go there, it's the best.

Umm... I could go on all day about this. But message me or something, if you'd like, I'd really like to hear more about this.

I hope I helped maybe a little. I'm happy to find another vegetarian with celiac.

Hi. I am new to this site also. I have known that I have celiac and casein sensitivity for over a year now.

It is hard to get used to the cravings, especially since I had eaten anything for my entire life prior (22 years). For the hungry feeling I try to drink water. If that doesn't help I will eat vegetables or something that I really like that still tastes good.

I recently crave protein all the time...hard boiled eggs are now my absolute favorite. Eating the protein helps with keeping you full because the breakdown in your body will take a long time and leave you feeling full. Hope this helps a little bit and good luck!

I don't have much experience with food allergies but I can tell you, eat alot of fiber. Not so much that you run to the bathroom every 15 minutes, but fiber at every meal helps you feel fuller. It also helps flush out anything in your system that makes you sick and if you are accidently "poisoned" it will help flush it out a bit faster. plus fiber keeps you way healthier

      @klmgarland, My dermatitis herpetiformis didn't clear up until I became meticulous about cross contamination. I cut out gluten-free oats and all gluten-free foods, dairy and gluten-free rice. Additionally, getting the right amount of protein for my body weight helped significantly in my body's healing process ... along with supplementing with enough of all the vitamins and minerals ... especially Zinc and Magnesium. I went from 70kg to 82kg in a year. Protein with each meal 3 times daily, especially eggs at breakfast made the difference. I'm not sure whether iodine was a problem for me, but I can tolerate iodine no problem now. I'm off Dapsone and feel great. Not a sign of an itch. So there is hope. I'm not advocating for the use of Dapsone, but it can bring a huge amount of relief despite it's effect on red blood cells. The itch is so distracting and debilitating. I tried many times to get off it, it wasn't until I implemented the changes above and was consistent that I got off it. Dermatitis Herpetiformis is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

      Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!

For a more specific direction, connecting with a dedicated celiac support group (online or locally) can be invaluable, as members exchange the most current, real-world tips for avoiding cross-contamination that you simply won't find in a pamphlet. You have already done the hardest part by getting a correct diagnosis. Now, the community can help you navigate the rest. If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people.
