My daughter went thru 3 months of this last year. She said she could only eat the fruit at the college and it was mostly offered in the morning. She only had a microwave and dorm fridge, picky eater plus hates to cook. I made entrees at home and froze them for her. She made layered mexican bean dip with chips. Lots of microwave rice noodles. Some have gluten so watch out. Fresh carrots, celery with PB, and fruit. She was on a meal plan but got a refund for alot of it so if you are, cancel it. Apple chips, popcorn and rice cakes. Very limited choices until we learned about the gluten free diet. Her doc was only about a mile away which helped alot. She ate at a mexican restaurant ordering corn tortilla items hoping she wouldn't get any gluten. Sometimes her friends shared so she would have enough to eat. When she had to cheat (No-No!) she would scrape the chicken off the flour tortilla. She lost 7 lbs. the first 2 weeks. Her PMS was extremely terrible but its much better now. She had an understanding roommate that never ate her food. This year she is in an apartment which makes things tons easier. Thats about it for now.

Straight A's. Its just like when you have a roommate who dies in the middle of the semester. The school feels sorry for you.

Haha be careful with that. Not all professors have so much sympathy. Depends on who you get, and how tolerant and/or open-minded they're willing to be towards your illness. Unfortunately, same goes with classmates/friends, but usually not as much. If anything, I usually get a lot of questions of curiosity. It's always a great conversation starter!

But anyway, what I suggest doing is packing a lot of your own food with you before you go off to school. Does your college offer a lot of other gluten-free options? If not, be prepared with your own food/recipes. I feel the pain of having the same microwavable rice-noodle dish night after night, but it's better than eating fries and a hamburger without the bun on it...haha. If I could go back, I would have asked for more options in gluten-free products (or, whatever else you may be allergic to). Oh, and if you can, register to purchase for the lowest meal plan possible -- it's usually rare that a college comes with a lot of gluten-free food. :-/

Is it manageable? Yeah. Does it get tedious after a while, eating the same food over and over again? Heck yeah. So try to add variety the best way you can with your own food that you bring.

Go to the teenager section and find the thread called: Anyone else dealing with this while in college. You might find some good tips.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
