Gluten And Cows Milk

I know that dairy is usually considered a gluten free food. We have been using Organic Valley milk in our family (gluten free on their site and I think the cows are predominantly at pasture therefore grassfed) with no problem so we know that none of us have a casein/lactose issue - however we are looking at moving to switzerland in the near future where "gluten-free"/grassfed cows milk is not available, so are starting to try regular store brand milks. My oldest daughter now (age 3) seems to be having some problems - gas pains and complaining of reflux after just 2 days on the "new" milk and my husband is also having some issues with gas and loose stool. I was wondering whether any one else has ever experienced this issue with "regular" milk?? this is just our first trial so i know that the symptoms could be due to accidental exposure elsewhere, but i'm interested in what you all have to say :)

I have problems with all milk. However, I've definitely heard of people who can tolerate milk from grass fed, organic cows, but not milk from conventionally raised cows. Do you live in the US now? If so, I'd imagine that the "regular" milk in Switzerland is quite different than the "regular" milk in the US.

I'm the same way. I'm not lactose intolerant and can handle any other dairy product-butter, sour cream, cheese, all of them. However, I can't handle cow's milk at all. It messes up my insides for usually 2-3 days. I usually get something like Lactaid and don't have a problem with it. I've also tried almond milk and soy milk and don't have a problem with either of those. Good luck searching!

yes - we're in the US now - thinking about the move! it is good (if you know what i mean!) to hear that you have heard of people with this issue as i havent found too much online - only that milk is thought to be gluten free. I agree that "regular" milk here probably is different from that available in Europe! - we're originally from the UK where there are no growth hormones/antibiotics in the "regular" milk, thats why for our first trial we picked the Whole Foods (no bGH/antibiotics) own brand rather than Giant or somewhere like that!! We are just worried about risking the move as there really is no going back once we've relocated and milk is a big part of our daughters diets (ages 3 and 1!) - we havent tried our youngest on alternative milk yet as she seems super sensitive!!

      There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

      There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.

      Thanks very interesting I have to see if I should take these 2 vitamins along with my multi and super Vit B complex or if its too much or would hurt me. I don't have any other health issues but would love to see if this improves anything especially to feel stronger build muscle.
