Last Sunday I was glutened at Outback. I went through some of my normal symptoms but very mild. Then tonight depression started. It seems so wrong to be doing so good and the wham. I can't even say that this was from last week. We had a picnic today at church and I brought my own foods. Then we had a couple visit that lived here 5 years ago and explaind whats been going on the last few months. I think it is just the emotions of the day. But it feels like my glutened depression. I just get tired of being different.

:(

Blessings, I just now prayed for you, sister. I had a tough day at church as well. I've missed a few meetings in recent weeks with back pain and issues with the Celiac. Today I was in a lot of pain, but was able to manage this morning with alternating ibuprophen and tylenol arthritis. I was so emotional though, all morning! I realized how I am isolating myself at home, away from all the bad food. I send my hubby and son out to eat, but I am scared to go myself. I have hurt all week so badly, and when people want to know how I am, I feel like starting with, "how long ya got?" Then I feel like I'm telling them more than they really want to hear. I was discussing a possible place for a future ladies luncheon and it dawned on me that I'd get to sit there, at my favorite place, and watch everyone else enjoy it. It's just really hard, isn't it?

I know what you mean. The same thing happened to me last week after going out to eat my birthday dinner at a supposedly safe restaurant. I didn't get D like in the past so that was the good news. However I got achy and had clogged up sinuses and was very depressed. It finally passed a day and a half later.

I think the thing is is that one needs to really be forward with the restaurant and talk to the manager etc. and go look at where they are preparing the food to really be certain no CC happens. Its a real hassle and sometimes a little embarrassing but it apparently really is needed. Otherwise slip ups happen.

Also its a good idea to take along some heavy duty pro biotics and bromelain/papain caps etc. to counteract possible CC when eating out. It helps. Also slippery elm caps and marshmallow caps help heal inflammation and soothe the intestines.

Hope you are starting to feel better again! Just take it slow and easy since your immune system may have been compromised.

I certainly understand how you are feeling. I am praying for you to feel better. The Outback has been a disappointment to me, as I have been glutened twice and both meals were from the gluten-free menu. I explained very clearly to the waiter and it appeared that my instructions and the need to have the food exactly as it was ordered were understood. I think the ball was dropped by the waiter and did not get as far as the cook. Unfortunately, my business with them has ended, as I cannot risk another bout of vomiting for hours. I just have decided that I'm a better cook and eat at home! The depression will end and it does get better. Good luck to you.

I understand. This whole thing has me very depressed as well. I'm hoping as I get the hang of it, it will be easier and I wont be so sad...or mad depending on the day..

I had an issue with Outback too. That has been the only place that I would go because the had a gluten-free menu. Well I ordered off the gluten-free menu and even talked to the waitress who seemed very good with everything. I got my meal and was eating and I had just said to my SIL who was with me that it was nice to feel safe at a resturant and I looked down at my plate and there was a french fry half way under my chicken. Outbacks fries are not gluten free. So ok, maybe it was just a fluke thing, but if they are supposed to be as careful as they say they are, then one of their gluten filled french fries should not have been on my plate. I was devastaed. Not so safe any more. They did take my plate and bring me a new one, and took it off our bill, but that wasn't really the point. I convinced myself that I would be fine. I didn't touch the fry or anything, so I wasnt' going to get sick. Well, so much for positve thinking. The whole next day was horrible. My stomach was just a mess and I felt like I hadn't slept in a week. I'm just not going to take the chance eating out anymore, its just not worth it. And yeah, that is depressing too.

This disease is a very emotional thing too, not just physical. I so understand the depression and saddness. You are not alone...

Hey guys

Thanks for the prayers and support. I am feeling so much better today. Just resting. I'm tired of doing nothing.

Yesterday I did some running around and bought some dried Plautos. They were so yummy but I spent the afternoon visiting the restroom. Felt like I had a Phosopho Soda. At first I thought it was a reation to a Humira shot but it had to be the dried fruit. I didn't have anything else new.

Always something. I see my counselor tomorrow. We are supposed to talk about an anti depressant. We'll see.

God Bless,

Vicky

Dried fruit is always iffy for me too. Besides just the candida/fungal issues I discovered a lot of it is dusted with gluten to keep it from sticking together...

I question anti depressants when just avoiding these hidden pitfalls works much better--especially since it takes a while to find an anti depressant that actually works for you plus getting used to it.

Hopefully it won't be too bad or last too long, Doll.

I had double checked the ingredients and it said

Ingredients

dried pluots (pluots, sulfer dioxide)

Product of USA

Members Mark brand from Sam's Club

I am going to try it again to see if it was them. I only had 5 of them.

God Bless,

Vicky

I am glad to hear that you are feeling better. I am with you on the down side of things, but my problem is that people have been bringing in lots and lots of sweets to work and I want them so bad! I am such a sweet freak, and not being able to enjoy things every day for 2 weeks has gotten me down. But, I know that this too will pass......

Make a gluten-free cheesecake and bring it in. I use Midel Pecan cookies and use the whole bag. I bake the crust while I mix the filling. I use Pamels Baking mix instead of flour and I use the regular Better Homes and Garden recipie. It will satisfy all your sweet needs. I have also used Pamelas simple bite chocolate cookies. I had to special order them. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

God Bless,

Vicky

I agree.  If someone has Barrett's Esophagus, at least here in the UK, as I understand it under normal circumstances a PPI needs to be taken long term (or similar medication).  I have two friends with this.  The PPI it does have side effects but they still have to take it.

Do talk to your doctor about making changes to your medication.    I'm not a medical doctor.   I'm a microbiologist.  I studied nutrition before switching to microbiology because I was curious what vitamins were doing inside the body. I would hate to give advice that jeopardizes your health, so do discuss things with your doctor.

@Jmartes71, Sorry you've been feeling so poorly.   Are you taking any medication to treat the SIBO?   Are you taking any Benfotiamine?  Benfotiamine will help get control of the SIBO.  Thiamine deficiency has symptoms in common with MS. Have you had your gas appliances checked for gas leaks and exhaust fume leaks?  Carbon Monoxide poisoning can cause the same symptoms as the flu and glutening.  Doctors have to check venous blood (not arterial) for carbon monoxide.  Are other inhabitants sick, or just you?  Do they leave the house and get fresh air which relieves their symptoms?

European wheat is often a "soft wheat" variety which contains less gluten than "hard wheat" varieties found in the States.   In European countries, different cooking methods and longer  fermentation (rising or proofing) times allow for further breakdown of gluten peptides. Wheat in the States is a blend of hard and soft wheat.  Gluten content can vary according to where the wheat was grown, growing conditions, when harvested, and local preference, so a blend of both hard and soft wheat is used to make a uniform product.   I moved around quite a bit as a child in a military family.  I had different reactions to gluten in different areas of the country every time we moved.  I believe some wheat breeds and blends are able to provoke a worse immune response than others.   Since European soft wheat doesn't contain as much gluten as American wheat, you may try increasing your intake of your soft wheat products.  A minimum of ten grams of gluten is required to get a sufficient immunological response so that the anti-gluten antibodies leave the intestines and enter the bloodstream where they can be measured by the tTg IgA test.  Your whole wheat bread may only have a gram of gluten per slice, so be prepared...

From my own experience and that of others who have tried to discontinue PPI use, I think your taper down plan is much too aggressive. It took me months of very incremental tapering to get to the point where I felt I was succeeding and even then I had to rely some days on TUMS to squelch flareups. After about a year I felt I had finally won the battle. Rebound is real. If I were you I would aim at cutting back in weekly increments for two weeks at a time rather than daily increments. So, for instance, if you have been taking 2x20mg per day, the first week cut that down to 2x20mg for six days and 1x20 mg for the other day. Do that for two weeks and then cut down to 2x20mg for five days and 1x20 for two days. On the third week, go 20x2 for four days and 20x1 for 3 days. Give yourself a week to adjust for the reduced dosage rather than reducing it more each week. I hope this makes sense.
