Hey guys.

I'm in Australia, where you can forget about getting flavoured potato chips. Anyway I was able to pick a bag of Walkers crisps from one of those great shops that has imported food.

It was the steak and onion flavour. On the packet it says that it is suitable coeliacs, however when you read the ingredients it has malt extract from barley which would make it unsafe right.....?

Could someone please tell me if they are gluten free and if not why it's labeled as such?

Could you also tell me if this is the case with any other flavours? I've eaten a few lately that said they were safe without checking the ingredients.

I think this is because Walkers crisps are English, and in the UK gluten free = less than 200ppm. Things containing barley malt can contain less than 200ppm of gluten, which means that legally they can be described as gluten free. It doesn't mean they ARE free of gluten. I wouldn't consider that gluten free though. In England you have to read the ingredients, where I believe gluten must be clearly labeled even if it is less than 200ppm, rather than relying on the label 'gluten free'.

      Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

      What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.
