Breast Milk

I was not sure where to post this.

Does breast milk contain gluten? Does anyone know the answer to this? The reason I ask is that sometimes my 17 month DD gets a rash on her face and I'm not sure what it is from. She gets no gluten, sugar, or diary in her diet at all. I wonder if it is from something in my milk? I notice that if I have chocolate or sugar she gets a rash but I'm not always 100% gluten free either and now I'm wondering....

If you're consuming some gluten and your daughter is sensitive to it, I wouldn't be surprised if that's why your daughter is having a reaction. I had to stop eating dairy products because my son has a severe intolerance to casein. Within a week he was much better, after a few more weeks he was completely back to normal. I had no idea such things could end up in breastmilk!

It has been awhile, but I do remember my daughters both reacting to foods that I ate. These were not gluten reactions, but it seems to be the same premise. They had gas pains etc. when I ate certain foods.

I believe that EVERYTHING you consume ends up in breast milk, including gluten.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
