Hello all,

I am a 20 year old college student who was just diagnosed with Celiac about a month ago. This summer a friend and I planned a community trip to Africa and will be spending a week on Safari in Botswana and three weeks teaching English in Cape Town. I am very concerned how I am going to handle eating gluten-free while I am there. Does anybody know of any restaurants or stores in Cape Town? What about airline restrictions, can I bring a tub of a peanut butter and rice cakes just to be safe?

Thanks!

-JD

This is the first time I'm going back to South Africa while being gluten-free. I feel like you can find gluten-free items, but it depends on your food stance. I have never had a problem eating lettuce at camps, but most travel advisories tell you to stay away from raw, uncooked vegetables/fruits etc. Communicate with your camps ahead of time. Do you have a travel agent? If so, contact him/her to get some advice.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.

I asked my cardiologist about stopping vitamins.  He said his tests account for all detectable vitamins from sources other than food.  I only need to stop them for a couple of days.  He has me keep records of meds and vitamins I've ingested over the past 10 days and prior and he does his calculations.

Reply to treats I try and eat to bring up the glucose. Sometime I get up 3 times a night and eat something. I don't think food is the issue. A lot of the food they say should help doesn't.  Many mornings my level is 59 and I feel sick, sometimes for hours. It has been recommended I go to an Endocrinologist.
