Problems With Anemia

Hi, I was diagnosed with celiac disease last year after my miscarriage. I've been feeling sick a lot and it's just gotten progressively worse. I had to go to the ER a few weeks ago and was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia after I had a CBC test

(RBC 3.43 HGB 8.7 HCT 27.9)

Anyway I'm not feeling any better but I was wondering if anyone else has iron deficiency anemia or if celiac disease can cause anemias that are more dangerous or serious than just iron deficiency. Thanks.

It sure can! I had ferritin levels of zero, and dangerously low iron. Went to two hematologists, one on 57th Street in Manhattan, and they didn't even consider Celiac. I also had all kinds of tests done, at various NYC hospitals, and the doctors never suggested, or tested for, Celiac.

BTW, are you on a gluten free diet?

Celiac can cause a B12 deficiency - its common to have both iron and B12 anaemias together - and B12 is not normally tested as part of the CBC. Low B12 is also linked to miscarriages. This newspaper carried a story about that just recently. Make sure Folate is also tested when you get the B12 tested.

Before I was diagnosed with Celiac I was anemic. I had suffered with low ferratin levels for years and took iron pills that made me very sick. Finally this summer I went to like my 50th doctor and she told me about Celiac disease. She told me that deficiencies like that are a symptom of something else usually.

Since going on the gluten free diet I have been feeling much better! If you are not on the diet you should be! Best of luck to you!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
