Temptation

I'm teaching a Sunday school class in the morning, for our High School age kids. The topic for discussion is temptation, and as an introduction to the topic, I'm supposed to bring in something appealing to start the kids thinking about temptations. We're then supposed to discuss various aspects of temptations, including why sometimes it's not a good idea to give in to them.

We've had a box of Ghiradelli brownies sitting in our pantry since before I had any symptoms of Gluten intolerance, so I figured I might as well make some of those for this class. It's not like we're going to eat them anyway. ;)

So as I'm mixing the brownies up, and getting ready to put them into the oven, I'm finding that I really want just a taste. In the past, when I made these brownies I would often take a taste of the batter as it went into the pan, or take a lick of the spoon or spatula I used to scoop them into the pan, and I found myself really wanting to do just that -- although I knew I couldn't.

Well. I guess I just taught myself a good lesson on temptation.

I hope I can do as well for the students tomorrow morning.

G F Man,

Wow - that's really cool that you had a temptation right before you're about to teach kids how to resist temptation. I know for me brownies were always a favorite, luckily Bob's RM has a pretty yummy gluten free mix. I know it may not be exactly the same type of temptation as your lesson will be on, but I imagine it will help the kids relate to you better. You may even want to mention what happened to your students!

Gosh I miss all those yummy foods! I know people who give in to those temptations, but I can't imagine how they justify it - it's just not worth it! :P

Hi Jen,

I've tried a couple of the gluten-free brownies, and while they're (mostly) not too bad, they're generally not something I'd have trouble resisting. :)

I'm casein-free too, but I sometimes cheat a little there (chocolate!), but the one time I cheated on gluten I was sick for over a week with flu-like symptoms (which could have actually been flu), so I'm not tempted enough to cheat on gluten anymore.

Oh -- and I'll definitely be fitting my reaction into the lesson!

Like that old potato chip commercial...nobody can eat just one (so don't even think about it!) Ha HA!

My friend teaches about the temptations of sin using the brownie example. She says she puts "dog poo" in it, you can't tell its in the brownies but would you want to eat it?? That's how deceiving sin is. It looks good at the time but more then "stinks" after you try it! It makes you "sick" and can cause death...hm...something to think about...eeewww!!!

Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
