Books And Recipes Recommendations For New Celiac

Budapest

Recommended Posts

Budapest Newbie

Hi. We're new here. My son, who is four years old, was diagnosed with diabetes at 22 months. He has been tested yearly for celiac, and this time the results came back positive-- IgG level was 30, IgA was 119. The blood test was done a second time and was again positive. We have not had the biopsy yet.

I've seen a few books for parents and children that looked good. Does anyone recommend a particular book? There was one by Danna Korn (for parents) that seemed interesting. I thought kids books might provide a good way to introduce the whole thing to our son (that also seems like quite a difficult topic!)

I'm also looking for cookbooks or internet sites with kid-friendly, healthy recipes (using whole grain flours rather than potato starch, etc.).

Thanks!

Hi there, and welcome!

I am new myself so I am am still wandering :o) My son's GI recommended the Danna Korn book "Raising Kids with Celiac Disease" and it became my second bible! I read it cover to cover in days and I suddenly felt less alone. It has tips on how to talk to your kids too. My 5 yo was old enough to "get it" but it still helped to have hints on how to put a positive spin on things. She also wrote a "Dummy" book....Living Gluten Free for Dummies or something like that and I loved it.

Our dx was just in Jan, so I haven't ventured much into making a lot of my own stuff yet....we are using Pamela's mixes for pancakes, cookies, etc. I am so blessed in that my son is a meat, veggie & fruit kid anyway so we pretty much stick to that most of the time.

Good luck....it is hard at first but it gets easier! BTW....my son had his scope done in Jan and it was a piece of cake. 2 hours after he was jumping on the couch playing "pirates" :o)

My favourite baking book by far is Gluten Free Baking Classics by Annalise Roberts. I've never had a failure using any of her rice mix recipes. We can't make her bread because we are millet and sorghum sensitive as well but everyone that makes them, loves them.

I find recipezaar.com to be invaluable for gluten free recipes and I love that the reviews are there to read for what's worked and what hasn't for other people.

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.

Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
