Temp Leaky Gut And How To Fix

After having an incredible year with my Celiac's things fell apart.

I was taking some anti-biotics and it turned into leaky gut I think...plus it didn't help that I also has gluten unknown to me.

I'm fighting feelings of hypoglycemia, and real hypoglycemia if I don't eat enough.

I am just on the border...I took some anitbiotics along with Tum's smoothies and it hit me, gluten and anti-biotics, bad combo. I recovered from that OK by eating slow digesting carbs and was good to go.

We had Easter Sunday dinner at our house just to make sure nothing bad happened. Well I think the Marzetti's dip my MIL brought over had gluten in it. Light stomach and other problems on Sunday night. Monday felt a little off. Sister took us to Outback and I went because its usually safe, ordered gluten-free.

Tuesday the hypoglycemia hit...I've been down this road before. My blood sugar will be in the good range but I feel like I'm having a hypoglycemic attack. I test it regularly and its all working just fine except I will hit in the low 70's if I go too long without eating, but its close to 7-8 hours. Even when it tests in the 80's I feel a bit jittery.

I read the diet for leaky gut, what exactly can you eat? I had used Snicker's bars in the past to get me through the day. Snicker's are high in sugar but because of their make up their glucose index is actually pretty low. I know Snickers are supposed to be gluten-free but I wonder if thats not contributing to my problem.

Tonight we had a very low carb dinner, chicke BBQ'd with Ken's Salad dressing, a salad with 1000 Island, and some green/red/yellow peppers in a olive oil. This is all gluten-free stuff. After the last round 3 weeks ago we called every single company for every product.

I swear Snicker's have changed their recipe...I've had hypoglycemia in the past. You feel dizzy, crappy, etc...you have some sugar and in 10 minutes if not less, your good...here my blood sugar level is rising to normal levels but I still feel off.

Takes a good 1/2 an hour to level out.

Any idea's? The endo I was seeing for this years ago is on vacation for another two weeks and he is honestly the only person I've trusted with my health since this started.

I have reactive hypoglycemia that is pretty well under control and I hope eventually cured for good. Leaky gut is the problem. Fix the leaky gut and hopefully you cure the hypoglycemia.

Snickers bars will not cure the leaky gut, and actually makes it worse. The goal is to keep your blood sugar level. Snickers candy bars raise it too fast, which creates the yo yo effect and in a couple hours blood sugar drops drastically. Each episode gets worse and worse.

I follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and have very little problems now. According to the creator of the diet it will take about 1 year to get better. I'm on month 7 and pretty much feeling normal.

Hope you find a diet to work for you. Protein and easily digested carbs will even out your blood sugar. The question is can you give up your favorite foods to get better? That is the hard part.

Good luck.

P.S. the glycemic index doesn't account for whether or not the food can be easily digested. Most all whole grains and high fiber foods have a low glyemic index, but a damaged leaky gut can't handle them. The undigested food passes straight into the blood stream causing your symptoms.

Thanks for the reply.

My leaky gut symptoms thankfully are not usually long lasting. I've been through this a few times and usually it takes a week or so to heal up, this time just seemed worse because now when I go back and look I probably had 3 opportunities where I had gluten over the span of 10 days, each little bit creating more of a problem.

The problem was this time around is that after I had gluten, had the inflamation, I had sugar and a few other things I should not have had too soon.

Things make a huge change over the past 2 days and I went nearly 9 hours without eating and didn't get a hypoglycemic reaction. I ate my dinner last night around 6:30, had Tandori Chicken, a Arabic cucumber salad, and then a fresh mixed greens salad with 1000 Island.

Made it all the way through to this morning at 8am where we had a single Van's gluten-free waffle with Agave, banana, single egg, and a small piece of cheese.

I hear sugar is a big thing for leaky gut. Since we've started our own business I find myself on the road a lot during the day and the sugar intake has really picked up. We were using maple syrup with the waffles, we had found a great Sweet Thai Chilli sauce that we made with pork/peppers over rice, and we also eat a lot of Indian food.

So I was loading up on rice and sugar all day long which probably put me where I am. Plus we bought a deep fryer to make fried fish on Friday's with french fries. We said we were just going to have fried food once a week but after reading what triggers leaky gut I probably put too many of those things together. I never had issues with leaky gut unless gluten triggered it. The Tums that had the gluten probably set it off.

I was fine last Sunday but after Easter dinner I blew up like a balloon.

Thankfully its all retracting now and we'll slow down on all the bad stuff.

Good or bad I have been having hand full of potatoe chips every few hours. Good or bad it keeps me level and there is no big crash associated with them.

We have no problem giving up the food, or reducing it. We both love Arabic food which pretty much fits the entire diet for leaky gut issues. With our business I can't be out of commission at all so not having the food is easy, I have no choice really. My wife is making chicken breast in lemon that we'll dip in a hummuus/garlic mix along with a Fahtoush salad. Dinner we'll have chicken marsala with some fresh Italian veggies.

We learned a long time ago, no food is worth your health. Even the things I was eating were not the worst, just too much, too fast, mixed in with gluten.

how do you know if you have leaky gut, or how can you find out?

how do you know if you have leaky gut, or how can you find out?

Well for me it was extremely problematic. I originally years ago thought I had a severe reaction to Cipro which caused:

nerve damage, uncontrollable shaking of the hands/arms/legs

muscle damage

memory loss

Thorasic Outlet Syndrome

Planter fasciatis(sp?)

insomnia

waking to a extremely rapid heart rate

muscle tension in the calves, shoulders, and neck

a permanent frontal lobe headache

Extremel anxiety/panic attacks

hypoglycemia/diabetes type symptoms

I could go on and on...I was like that for about six months but I was eating gluten, this was before I gave it up.

Reducing my gluten intake helped a lot of the symptoms and eliminating it fixed everything for the most part.

Now I've had those symptoms re-occur but for much much shorter periods of time, 1 week at best, 2 at worst. They are the most severe when I have gluten/sugar, brings me back to square one.

I never knew what was causing, just thought it was the gluten but now I know it was leaky gut. The good news is it heals extremely fast.

The bad news is I was having processed gluten unknown to me in small amounts for about a week or so. Plus a lot of sugar.

I can "have" gluten and just get a stomach response if it is unprocessed...if its processed, deep fried, etc then it causes the leaky gut reaction, don't ask me why but thats what it does.

So the sugar fed the leaky guy problem.

I don't have the anxiety, extreme nerve problems, or the muscle problems now. I take a bunch of B12 and D3 which means I just get hypoglycemica/diabetic reactions.

I'm lucky in that it heals extremely fast, or had in the past. However my sugar intake now is much higher than what it used to be. Pure sugar, not HFCS.

I cut out sugar and I feel great....I wake up with a little bit of a rapid heart beat but that is going away.

I'll stay away from sugar for 2-3 weeks and be good as new.

The frustrating part is I suffered for nearly a year, and then again the next year because no doctor could figure it out.

Eric-C Enthusiast

I forgot to mention. These were the severe results.

Now knowing what I know this all started one night back in October 6 years ago.

I was in the basement on the phone and had a panic attack, never had one in my life...that was the first time Celiac's showed itself.

Things were up and down for years but even when the Celiac's seemed to go away, and yes it did go away for a while, when things came back I started out with twitchy eyes and face muscles.

That came and went for years before it really got bad.

I had gotten an anti-biotic shot years go and had the same response as the Cipro but only for 3-4 days. Never thought much of it but now I can piece it all together.

So the first stuff is very minor...I had twitchy eyes for a year...turns out that was one of the first signs.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
