My friend's son is not feeling well for a couple of day. At first we thought it was just a cold or simple illness but someone told that it could be celiac disease. Just wondering the symptoms of celiac disease.

Can anyone please help. .?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

Alas, there is no particular set of symptoms which define celiac disease, which is one of the reasons it is so hard to diagnose.

The former classic case of celiac was the child who failed to thrive, was underweight with distended belly, and digestive symptoms of either diarrhea, constipation, or sometimes alternating both, often vomiting and intolerance of many foods.. This is what doctors have been trained to recognize.

Nowadays we know that celiac presents in many different forms., especially as one gets older. If you could describe the symptoms of your friend's son, someone here might be able to offer an opinion as to whether they are consistent with celiac disease. A two-day history, however, is unlikely to offer many clues.

Here is a checklist of symptoms. Open Original Shared Link After going undiagnosed for nearly a decade I had probably a third of the symptoms on the list. Some people are asymptomatic and are only diagnosed after a relative is and routine screening is done on all family members. I know a lady like that who only gets a very mild cramp in the side when she ingests gluten, but she was formally tested so know without a doubt that she has celiac disease. Symptoms or no, damage is done to the body so it's important to carefully rule it out if it is suspected. Usually people notice ongoing problems and/or a family history of symptoms and/or other related disorders that cause them to suspect it.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
