Pampas Brazilian Steakhouse In Palo Alto, Ca

I just moved from San Francisco to the Peninsula, so I don't really know where a lot of the good restaurants are. My boyfriend remembered going here a while back, and suggested it. Pampas is right next to the Palo Alto Caltrain station. Open Original Shared Link

I checked out the website in advance, and decided that there were only a few meats on their Rodizio (all you can eat meat on skewers) that might be questionable. I asked the waitress once I got there, and she told me the meats were ok, but then made me a bit nervous when I started asking questions. She was new, so she went and asked the chef just to make sure. (I love when they do that without asking.)

She came back with an extra plate of one type of bread that we'd already gotten at the table, and said it was gluten free. My first thought was "uh oh." Then the chef came out and told me that the little cheese breads were made with manioc flour, and that they were gluten free. They were SO GOOD! She then told me everything on the menu that wasn't gluten free, and why. There's not much with gluten in the first place. The chef was great! She said she totally understood because her mother is gluten intolerant. I was impressed that the huge side dish buffet had little cards at each dish that said "vegan," "contains garlic," etc.

It was an excellent meal, and I still feel great this morning, post meal. :)

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
