I am 25 and diagnosed in Feb with celiac, I also had my gallbladder removed 5 days prior to being diagnosed and they said they my lympnodes were extremely inflammed from which found out was the celiac. I have been sticking to a very stict diet and have accidentally gotten glutened a few times and dont know it til the next day, but recently in this past 2 weeks, I have had bloating and alot of gas build up that is causing pressure in my belly and having pretty bad muscle spasms and being treated with bentyl (antispamtic) I wondered if anyone else has had problems like this and if so what has helped... I have now eliminated dairy from my diet because I was eating alot of it and having no problems, but i thought maybe that could be causing it. The doctor also has been treating me since surgery with prilosec due to irritation of the liniing of my stomach due to years of eating gluten. Went to the doctor when he prescibed bentyl one week ago and he said it also could be IBS which is common in celiac? Can someone please give me advice!!!

Thanks!

The first thing you need to do is check your scripts and any supplements for gluten. Don't trust your doctor to know ask the pharmacist or call the company directly.

Take a good look at anything new you may have added in the last two weeks and also check to make sure about whether stuff is made in the same plant as gluten items. Many of us become more sensitive to CC as we heal.

In addition it is a good idea to check all your toiletries and make sure if you are sharing a home with gluten eaters that no one is double dipping into condiments, nut butters jelly etc.

One last thing is that although distilled gluten grains are safe for most some of us will react to them. If you drink alcohol it is best to stay away from gluten grain alcohols until you have had time to heal fully.

You may also want to consider trying Pepto Bismal liquid for the stomach pain instead of an acid blocker. For some it does away with the pain in one dose and you won't have a risk of any rebound with the pepto which you may have with the script meds. Being gluten free will help you stomach heal if that was the cause of the irritation.

Thank you so much, I will def. check into the scripts tommorow and sometimes i think i am so worried about getting glutened and feeling bad that i cause stomach problems from anxiety, trying to work on that. I do share the home with husband and he tries so hard to be careful but he slips up and i cant fault him for that. I just keep hoping with time this can only get better (fingers crossed) I hope this site is helpful to me, celiac is not common at all where i live and some people still think my doctors crazy. Thank you any advice is much appriciated.

This site will be very helpful to you I am sure. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people who have walked in your shoes. Do feel free to ask any questions you need to and feel free to vent frustrations. It will get better but there is a lot of learning that goes with the gluten free lifestyle, it is much more than just food. Labeling regs also leave a lot to be desired and when in doubt call a company before you consume anything. It does get easier with time. If you stick with whole unprocessed foods in the beginning it helps you to heal faster as there is less risk of cross contamination. Do read as much as you can here and hang in there. The stomach pain is more likely to be gluten sneaking in than anxiety. One thing you also may want to consider is either deleteing dairy or sharply restricting it at first. The same area damaged by gluten produces the enzymes you need to digest dairy. It may help the healing go a bit faster to avoid it and then when you have been feeling good tummy wise for awhile add it back in starting with yogurt and hard cheeses. Since you live with a gluten eater there are a couple of things you can do. Get your own condiments and label them, also be sure to get another dedicated gluten free toaster for your use only. Many that live in a combined house designate one area for making gluten sandwiches etc and if he cleans up his own crumbs that will help. I hope you are feeling better soon.

For back pain, I take a combination of Cobalamine B12, Pyridoxine B 6, and Thiamine B 1 (in the form Benfotiamine), which have an analgesic effect.  These three B vitamins together work way better than those over the counter pain relievers.  Theses are water soluble B vitamins that are easily excreted via the kidneys if not needed.  Thiamine will also help the nausea. @stephaniekl, welcome to the forum, Is your daughter taking any nutritional supplements?   Weight loss and failure to thrive are two symptoms of thiamine insufficiency.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms are not recognized as such by doctors.   I experienced similar symptoms when I became malnourished.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms can become worse quickly, and can affect one emotionally and mentally.  Although blood tests for thiamine aren't accurate, do have your daughter checked for nutritional deficiencies.  Thiamine B 1 works with the other B vitamins and magnesium.  Thiamine and Niacin B 3 help improve Gerd.  All the B vitamins are frequently low due to malabsorption.  Vitamin D will help calm the immune system.  Thiamine helps the immune system fight off viruses like those tick borne illnesses.   Thiamine Mononitrate, which is in many vitamin supplements, is not bioavailable.  I was taking a multivitamin containing thiamine mononitrate and still became deficient in thiamine. Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.  A form called TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) is also excellent for correcting thiamine deficiency.  A combination of Thiamine, Cobalamine B12, and Pyridoxine B 6 has analgesic properties.  I take it for back pain.   Keep us posted on your progress! Has prednisone or some other systemic steroid been tried that might quiet her immune system down for a while? I have two acquaintances with Lyme's disease. It is a wicked condition that has long fingers.

We have.  She is so limited as to what she can eat.  She has a nutritionist, but they are even at a loss.  Right now, her pain is so significant that she can only eat 5-10 bites a meal.   We just got some labs back today and she is hypoglycemia, anemic and her immune system is shot.  She also is positive for 3 tickborne illnesses.  Thanks for your help!

A much better suggestion than that of the new doctor!
