Ds Was Given Pretzels.

Ds has been gluten-free for a month now. My dh took him over to friend's of ours to play for the afternoon. When he got home ds asked for a snack and I asked him if he had anything at his friend's? Dh informed me that all he had was pretzels.

I looked at him and asked why he had pretzels? Dh said he wasn't even thinking and that it just occurred to him that he shouldn't have had them. Uh! Yah, you think?

So since we are new to this, I am curious as to whether or not this will effect ds. It has been a few hours since he had them and so far he is fine.

I don't react to a glutening for a day or two. But everyone is different...some people react almost instantaneously. What were his symptoms before he went gluten free? It's likely that he will experience something similar, although I really hope he doesn't have a bad reaction!

Ds' symptoms were cramping and diarrhea, usually within a few hours of eating gluten. He has not been diagnosed yet, were are still waiting on the referral to the ped-gastro for testing, but all the signs point to Celiacs.

I'm hoping he doesn't react and that it truly isn't Celiacs, this is my wishful thinking. Plus I hope it doesn't effect him tomorrow since we have a 5 hour drive for our vacation.

You might want to check with the specialist's office about this, but testing will be skewed by being gluten free. Most doctors advise staying on gluten until after the testing.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
